Following potential 2017 draftees...

I would love to get Zach Collins. If he was available at 12 I would trade Hood for him.

I dont think trading 1 year of Hood and his RFA rights are worth a backup to our best player. Given Snyder's lack of willingness to play Favors at the 4, I doubt Collins is worth that much to them (if you have some grand vision of a Twin Towers situation). At this point I dont think I would do this trade for anyone besides Mitchell, maybe Frank N, but probably not.

But they arent at the LT yet are they? Even if KCP gets a max, they are still under the LT, right? I dont see the need to dump salary rn if they can just add talent through trades (like it has been reported, not what fans want on message boards). Remember SVG is the coach/manager. He is managing the team so the coach can look good and keep his job.

According to this article, if they have to match a max offer to KCP they're in the luxury tax...

They are already staring at an expensive and somewhat limited roster. Drummond is on a max contract, Jackson received a large contract when he was a free agent, and Harris was traded for while already on a large deal. This leaves Detroit potentially facing the luxury tax if they are forced to give or match a max deal for Caldwell-Pope.

Because of that, and some questionable fits on the roster, the Pistons explored trades for Jackson and Drummond both. They reportedly engaged Orlando in trade talks for Jackson, but ultimately got nowhere. Several teams discussed trading for Drummond as well. Van Gundy, as both coach and President of Basketball Operations, is in a tricky spot. The coach in him wants to be as competitive as possible and get to the postseason. The front office side of Van Gundy has to balance that goal with the long term health of the franchise.

...

With little chance at cap space, even if they lose all of their free agents, expect Detroit to match any offer on Caldwell-Pope. They can’t replace him and he’s young enough that continued improvement can still be expected. This will make the roster expensive, but that is something that Van Gundy can work on by moving contracts as the season progresses. That might even include moving on from Drummond or Jackson, or really anyone. Van Gundy is aggressive and will do what he has to in order to set the Pistons back on a course to consistent playoff berths.

I think Collins would be a perfect fit next to Gobert. You might be right though it all depends on what the team thinks about it. I might be in the minority with this idea but I would love to grab Collins to play next to Gobert.

I just dont think Quin would ever do it and if he isnt going to do it, it doesnt make sense as a trade.

I totally forgot Detroit is still paying Josh Smith 5 million a year for the next 3 years.

When I look at their roster, their biggest issue is they are paying 22 million to 3 backup bigs (Leuer, Baynes, and Marjanovic). Maybe they get lucky and Baynes opts out? That should be a Jazz lesson, dont ask for the Jazz to pay money to anyone backing up Rudy.

I guess they are tighter to the cap than I expected. Their best players are on decent deals, but they have a lot of mid priced players who dont really make sense and are just slightly overpaid, but it adds up (plus the Josh Smith thing lol). Van Gundy just made some stupid deals, like giving Ish Smith 18 million for 3 years. I didnt realize he overpaid this many guys who are just backups. Luckily none of them are terrible, so I think he can get out of this relatively easily. Think he just has to move one player and he is good for next year (especially if Baynes opts out which is up in the air from what I've read).

They will be at 107 million after they renounce the rights to Bullock (seems likely). The LT will be at 122 from what I've read and Baynes contract is 6,500,000. So they get lucky and he opts out, they are at 101 million before having to pay KCP, who could get maxed. This is when that 5,000,000 they are paying Smith really hurts them lol.

Hood could potentially get a max offer and Collins could be the starting PF on a rookie contract. It would help out the cap space down the road as well.

Again, I highly doubt Quin sees Collins and thinks PF. That is a big distinction that completely changes his value to the Jazz. I'm on board with you thinking it's possible, but I dont know if I trade Hood for a positional experiment that the NBA is trending away from.

Fair enough. Would you trade Hood for Mitchell?

I want Terrence Ferguson in the worst way. I think he made a huge mistake going over seas instead of going to college, if he had I think he'd be out of our range right now. Fact is he's young with less experience then most. He doesn't play much, but everytime I watch his highlights, it just looks sooooo good. It just pops out at me. And from reading about him he's improved a lot as well as his roll on his team, and seems taylor made for the jazz offense. He's way underrated.
