Following potential 2017 draftees...

We take back salary and likely lose Ingles. Or get a cheaper point guard than Hill by about $10M a year.

If Utah is able to re-sign even two of those guys, we most likely will need to cut salary ourselves by opting out. We don't want to trade Diaw for someone else's unwanted salary.

Portland has 3 contracts they need to get rid of. The only player I'd have any interest in is Crabbe, but we simply can't afford him if we are able to re-sign our guys.

I just don't see these teams trading us someone we want and giving us a pick/swap. They are going to want to dump their unwanted contracts.

Utah really isn't in a position to give cap relief to another team unless we lose our FAs.

Are you assuming we are losing Hayward, Hill, and Ingles? I'm not sure what you're getting at with this. These teams would have to send salary back in order for Diaw's contract to help them cut salary.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Yes, the Jazz would have to take someone back. I'm assuming the Jazz are 50-50 on keeping Hill. I think that's the case regardless. I think they want to keep Hayward and Ingles, while actively exploring other options at PG. If they can find a PG they like for $14M or $16M, I think they'll go that route.

Well, in Portland's case, they have 3 contracts they need to dump, but none of them are possibilities for Utah to take. I don't see them giving up a pick/swap without dumping one of their bad deals.

the only one that I've come to that makes sense is not for a pick but for a player - Danny Green. But in this case you lose Ingles. If the Spurs are looking for capspace to go after CP3, we can give it to them for Green. It makes sense if you think Ingles is going to get massively overpaid(14-15-16M)...

And herein lies the question - if you could choose between Ingles and Green(and you would have to choose, you won't be able to have both), who do you choose? Assuming equal salaries?

Portland is another team in cap hell that could swap picks in return for Diaw's contract. They have #15.

The only trade that would make sense is Utah taking Meyers Leonard.

Crabbe/Turner are too rich for a 9 spot bump.

Ezeli or Davis are probably not enough (just 1 year 7 million left on each of them) to jump 9 spots.

I guess Ingles because he is a lot more versatile on offense.

And we could get both if we find some magical way to unload Burks.

Yeah, if they can trade for Bledsoe(I think that's the best combination of fit and salary), it is possible they will be able to do it. But it has to happen after we secure Bledsoe/or another similar PG. I don't think we can go to FA without a PG or without the willingness to pay Hill. We need to have one of those in order to have a chance in hell to get Hayward back.

So lets assume the Jazz are losing Withey, Mack, Diaw.

They max Hayward and offer Ingles something like 3 years / $26M. The fact that Ingles is an RFA may soften his market a little. Not much though.

They see what Hill's market is like. They draw a line in the sand with Hill at 4 years / $80M, which I personally think is too much, but nvm.

Jazz are over the cap and pushing LT.

Next year, they let Favors walk and extend either Hood or Exum with the money.

The last asset the Jazz have to improve the roster before they hit the above scenario is last year's cap space of $13M and Diaw's non-guaranteed deal.

So the question becomes what to do with it.

Not really. Burks is not enough. I've made the calculations. Even after clearing Burks, if we take 10M in salary in exchange for Diaw, we will be in the tax.
