What's new

Following Potential 2018 Draftees

I remember the stories of Noah Vonleh bringing a bed to the gym so he could just wake up and start working. So now I put no stock into this lol. I haven't watched any Okogie, but I've heard a lot about him recently so I'll have to check him out.

I actually think Noah could be a good buy super low guy. So young when he came in. I think you get him in a good program on a minimum 2 year deal and he could be a solid backup traditional 4.

I think Okogie has more than just work ethic, but you are right... there is some of that "gym rat" talk this time of year.

interesting no one here is talking about Simons?
I listened to some interview with Simons where he said he visited with Mitchell during the season in SLC(I don't know when exactly that was and for how long).

I zeroed in on Simons from the moment I saw his highlights. His skill and athleticism are extremely enticing. His off the dribble pull up game is somewhat similar to what Fultz was doing in college before he... forgot how to shoot. If you see some pictures of him you would probably think he's like... 14 or something. This IMO will dictate that he will probably need a year or two of developing his body before he can make impact in the league. His body is not ready, he needs heavy work in an NBA strength and conditioning program. I love his upside, but I also think he might have to play in the G-League for a while.

There are some new videos of him shooting and I don't love his release point. It looks low to me, a bit like Stanley Johnson's when he was in the draft process. Still his shot seems quick enough and repeatable and it is falling so the release point is just a minor concern IMO. From what I've read he also doesn't have super high BBallIQ and he's not the same level of playmaker that Fultz was. He also seems to settle for jumpshots and floaters too much. IMO he has the athleticism to attack the rim more and the Jazz have generally done very good job teaching their players in this specific facet of the game. What I don't like is just how much his handlers are hiding him in this pre-draft process. They pulled him out of college, then they pulled him out of the Hoop Summit just weeks before the game, then they didn't let him play in the combine scrimmages... I wonder if they will let him compete vs other prospects in the private workouts?

Right now I would say I would be OK with the pick and even a bit excited, but I've kind of mellowed down on him.

There's going to be someone who'll tell you the hard worker narrative literally about anyone in the draft. People putting that out are actively trying to push a narrative and as a fan I'd be suspicious. I'll trust the team psychologists though who'll try to determine with quizzes and interviews what's driving a prospect and how he views himself and all those interesting questions where it's apparent that you need proper psych evaluations when looking at guys at that age. And this part of the puzzle is completely unavailable for fans except when players share certain questions they've faced in interviews.

After Dante I am not ready for the mystery upside pick. I hope he is drafted in front of us. If we want him I'd try and acquire another pick in the 25-35 range to do it.

Yeah he does that thing that Dante did until this season where he doesn't get all the way to the rim, and takes like a weird half floater/half layup thing. I think he's just too skinny and shies away from contact.

I get a CJ Miles vibe from Simons. Does he need diapers?

Long term project?

Swing for the fences type pick? Unless you feel hes too good to pass up there are several guys who will make this team better right away.

Guys I'd be happy with:

KBD
Okogie
Huerter
Donte
Evans
Brown

Guys I'd be sad with:

Milton
Brunson
Simons
Holiday
Robinson, Mitchell
Wagner

Would be cool with any of the guys in the second group in the second round.

Guys I'm intrigued with but not sold on:

Jerome Robnison
Okobo
Justin Jackson
Shamet

I think we can get one of the Philly picks with a reasonable offer. 26, 38, 39. the also have 10 and a roster crunch.

I'd see if they would trade our 2019 1st (lotto protected) for 26. Clears some space and they defer a pick... I think the 2019 draft is pretty meh as of right now. I think they might do Bayless for unguaranteeds and maybe a future second. They may use 26 to move up and get Mikal.

I also wonder if they'd do Bayless and 38/39 for the unguaranteed guys.
