I don’t think the Jazz are in a perpetual rebuild though.
Lauri is aging, but has proven to be awesome when healthy.
Keyonte has taken a huge step forward and still looks to have more upside.
Kessler was looking great before he hurt his shoulder and got shut down.
Ace and WCJ are both rookies who’ve shown some flashes. Ace in particular has such ridiculous upside.
If any of Sensabaugh, Hendricks, Filipowski, Collier and/or Cody turn out to be NBA caliber players, they can provide depth or value in a trade.
And while the team’s assets have certainly depreciated since the summer of ‘22, you can get into the conversation if you throw enough picks into the mix. Probably doesn’t get you into the Giannis sweepstakes, but it can get you a guy like Deni if you’re positioned to make an advantageous trade.
Just have to extinguish the Thunder’s claim to the current pick.
I mean those Cavs assets are suddenly looking a little more valuable. . .
It was always a catch 22, if we were Washington Wizards quality this season, it would mean that all of our past picks were terrible and we wasted our time. If those picks were passable to good, we probably aren't among the very worst teams in the NBA. What we needed was timely injuries and we got that with Kessler, who I would have pegged as the biggest difference between winning and losing before the season. Without that Kessler injury, there was no chance that we are in any position to keep our pick.
The best position to be in is a "treadmill team" with assets. That is the only position where you actually control your own destiny. We are already that, so I am good. We can still be that AND get a great pick which would be amazing, but our baseline is pretty decent, which is what you hope for, especially as there has never been a lottery pull, or coinflip for that matter, that has EVER been kind to the Jazz.
