Game Thread: Jazz vs. $210 Million Payroll known as the Nets

Ya thats what i thought you must have been thinking of.

At that point there was actually 32 seconds left though so they didnt technically NEED a three

Edit: there was a play at 11 seconds left when alec scored a reverse layup but there was no assist involved.

The play at 32 seconds left was the backdoor cut by alec with a great feed by trey, for a burks dunk

Yeah, you don't get an assist on an out-of-bounds pass......

I went into the basketball statistics manual to try to find where it says that a pass from out of bounds cant be an assist.
This is what I found reguarding assists: An assist is a pass that leads directly to a teammate scoring, if and
only if the player scoring the goal responds by demonstrating
immediate reaction towards the basket. Only one assist can be
credited on any score. Even if the "second-to-last" pass set up the
play, it is not an assist.
An assist is credited when a pass is made to a teammate who
shoots and scores-provided the shooter's immediate intention,
upon receiving the ball, was to shoot and that intention was maintained
until the shot was taken. It does not prohibit an assist where
the shooter takes time to balance or makes a small play to score,
provided the scorer always intended to shoot.

Then I did a good search asking "can a player record an assist from out of bounds?"
Found the answer to be yes apparently

FishBro, I have the game in front of me and am actually watching the plays happen. Marvin inbounds to Burks as he has momentum towards basket, Burks takes 1 dribble, does a reverse layup. NO ASSIST TO MARVIN. Would have been an assist if it wasn't an inbounds play. You don't get assist on inbounds plays.

Should have been an assist then according to all the info i can find.

Seems the stats guys missed one

In basketball can you get an assist by throwing an ally-oop pass from out of bounds?

If the same pass would earn you an assist on the court, would you earn the same stat from a pass originating from an inbounds pass?

Yes, an assist in basketball is the pass that led directly to a basket.

So an alley oop pass ia an assist regardless if it came from out of bounds.

Yes. As long as it leads to a score by a field goal. Meaning that the player was "assisting" in the basket

Yes you can. If you want an example to verify, look at the play by play from the Spurs/Magic game where Dwight got an alley-oop from out of bounds to end the game:

0:00 Orlando 20 Sec. timeout
0:00 104-106 Dwight Howard makes two point shot (Hedo Turkoglu assists)

^^ Turkoglu got the assist and he was the one making the pass from out of bounds.

Yes, absolutely you can, and the Howard alley-oop example is perfect to illustrate that point.

However, if the pass accidentally goes in the hoop by itself on the pass from out of bounds, it does not count as a basket.

These are all just answers from regular people like you and me so take it for whats its worth (one of them is a ref apparently) but all of these people say that you can get an assist from an out of bounds pass and they seem to cite an ally oop inbounds pass to Dwight howard that was credited as an assist.

I'm nearly positive inbounds plays are never recorded as assist.

I honestly had/have no idea but when i use the internet to find out, i find things that make believe it is an assist but cant find anything saying it isnt.

Nothing really conclusive though either way.

The point is you knew what you were talking about on that play 11 seconds left though. So you were right

I thought he was talking about the play with 0:11 seconds remaining. Jazz needed a 3, but couldn't get an inbounds play at the 3pt line so just opted for a Burks cut to the basket off the pass.

thats the one I was talking about. Jazz had an inbounds play and HAD to have a 3 to have any chance whatsoever.

Brooklyn sucks so bad. They're so old and slow and have an even worse offensive design than we do! Yet, they made us look foolish. Andray Blanche looked like Karl Malone against us.

The weird thing about this team isn't how suck they are. It's how boring and emotionless are look. Which really just feeds my desire to tank. This team is in desperate need of a full reboot. We have a 6 foot JR smith, another AK47, boozer and Jefferson had a white Turkish love child, a sane Javale McGee rides the bench, 2 vets are using our corpse, and a young D Wade who plays zero defense comes off our bench. Oh and we have the worst coach in the league.

Such a weird team

Never mind, I found it myself....

OK, so with the opposing team up 4 points and 30+ seconds left our HC thought The Nets were going to try to go 2-for-1?

Please god let Coach Ty be in on the tank - otherwise I'd have a hard time getting my mind around the fact that I root for a team that is run by a person who would actually say something like this with a straight face.

Holy **** he really didn't say that right?? What ****ing alternate universe is this that a coach at any level would think like that. God I hope DL heard that. Hell! The nets aren't even a fast pace team!!
