Hawks have no leverage in negotiations. Teague will be an UFA and has made it clear he doesn't want to stay. They also have a rookie PG ready to assume the reins in Schroeder. Atlanta is playing chicken and trying to get a lot of assets. In reality, a backup and a future first is more than fair. If they don't take something, they'll be left with an unhappy player and the price will go WAY down next summer or next season for a player who only has 1/2-1 season left. Expiring deals are worth next to ZERO with the cap increasing so much. Only a team wanting to add a couple of max players is going to need to clear space. And there will be a bunch of facilitators lined up to use their extra room under the floor to do so for minor assets.

"no leverage" is too strong. If the crowd of buyers grows, then that improves ATL's position. Some people call that leverage.

They have some leverage if other teams have offers out there. The Bucks are the ones that i think could make the best non-Utah offer. I think if we don't pony up something of value they walk and trade him this offseason. The timing of this always seemed curios to me. I thought they might look to add to their veterans not subtract.

I'd send the OKC pick and Burke plus cap fodder. The OKC pick has limited protections and it likely turns into two second round picks. That way they can at least save face and say they got a good young player (in burke) and a first rounder for Teague.
 
I also watched the game last night. Teams don't respect Dennis' shot at all and I am not sure he's ready for the full time gig. His defense was disruptive several times though.

I wouldn't say Teague has mailed it in for them... he seemed to be trying and hustling, but I'm sure mentally he isn't 100% there. There is some bad mojo around that team right now and the ball was not moving like it did last year... they were awful.

Surprised the article doesn't mention Trey Burke at all - is the plan in ATL really to go with Shelvin Mack as the #2 PG?

That guy is awful - I'm surprised he's still in the league.

Also, if the plan is to ease back in Exum with Teague running the PG in the interim, then we're talking up giving up Burks for what amounts to 120 game rental? I dunno about that.

I'd be surprised if there hasn't been preliminary talks yet. Not like there are many suitors for Teague, and even less with good assets.

Yep. Makes more sense for them to take Burke. They get a PG who can come off the bench, or if Schroder falters, start. Wouldn't Burke + Booker and a protected first get it done? The sticking point might be that they want Burks, Even though we need a PG, I fully support DL holding firm and saying that's too much. Jazz would likely make the playoffs, so the deal is essentially getting Burke's rights + a pick in the 15-18 range for a player they're going to lose in 1 more year. Throw in Booker and they have some energy/attitude for this year's playoff run.
 
I don't include Burks. It's still basically a 1 year rental. Burks (age/contract/talent) is worth WAY more than a one year rental of Teague IMO.

I'm not ready to give up on Alec's 6th man potential - especially now that Hood is starting to find his groove. Burke, Booker and/or picks. I'd also take a good look at Jeremy Lin for the same type of deal.

Gobert, Favors, Lyles, Hayward, Hood, Burks, Teague, Neto is a decent rotation for the playoffs. Add Withey or Jingles depending on matchups, and the Jazz should be okay if they can stay healthy.
