Gobert Not Participating in Eurobasket This Summer

This is how the foreign team players feel towards playing for their National Team though. I think most understand they have to take some years off, but we all knows Gobert is going to be there for the Olympics and when they need to qualify. It's something he wants to do.

Yes if it's his choice then good for him. I wish him well. But if he chooses not to there should be absolutely NO expectation that he play. There is no commitment, no duty owed. It's the player's choice. Period.

Define "duty" then, because the idea that Gobert "owes" his talent to a country where he no longer lives for some esoteric reason is very primitive thinking. He doesn't owe France anything other than taxes, and maybe owing to his fellow french-men to be a good citizen and uphold the laws of the country, be a good neighbor, etc. But he absolutely does NOT owe them something that gains him nothing and risks his personal future career in a very real way. Just ask Exum what that "duty" got him.

You won't get my defining of duty because im talking from my standpoint. In Turkey, it is duty of the player to play for national team. Noone questions it. This year Ersan Ilyasova might not play for national team for same reasons. And he will get lots of complaints within the country for sure.

It is totally different standpoint how "Duty" is defined in usa.

Did you hear he came back for the last three games?

And averaged 13ppg, 10rpg and 2 bpg on a hobbled knee in games 5 and 6. game 7 he didn't really get to play.

I agree that he needs to get some moves down low and a hook shot but saying he was even somewhat exposed is not accurate.

A lot of foreign players have stated a Gold Medal in the Olympics would be more important to them than a Larry O'Brien trophy.

Take the example of Australia where most of the players have benefited from tax payer funded training at the Australian Institute of Sport. Look at the effort Bogut put into playing for Australia at Rio, the players get paid a living allowance of 250 dollars a day (They're not exactly doing it for the money) and he paid for his own physio to travel with the team out of his own pocket. I can't find the footage but after a close loss to Team USA but he basically says that getting close to beating them isn't good enough. I love it when guys play for the shirt.
