Gobert's Offense

I'm waiting to see how he fares against the like of Steven Adams and Andrew Bogut who have physically had their way with him before deciding how improved Rudy is

I don't think the fact that it's preseason needs to be clarified. It's common sense that the players don't play as hard in preseason, Gobert won't face starting front lines of Bass and Speights in the regular season, he won't average 20 & 10, and he won't shoot over 80% from the line. He will likely tire throughout the long NBA season as most players do, and will become a little more inconsistent with his newly formed skills as he becomes further removed from his meticulous summer reps, but he'll still end this season with a higher skill base than he ended with in the previous one. He will still be a relatively poor offensive player this season; however, it's painfully obvious that he has improved his offensive game. That's really all that needs to be said.

Well thanks Sherlock, since we are in the painfully obvious department, let me say that since the fact that it's preseason doesn't need to be clarified, I don't need to clarify either that nothing is painfully obvious in the NBA until it takes place in actual NBA games right ? Refrain from being condescending please, it's very possible the glimpses we have seen in those games don't stick during the season, just as it's perfectly possible too that there is a real improvement. The What is clear is that it is way too early to draw conclusions ont what is painfully obvious or not.

Yes, but we can still hope he will manage to bust out a move or two against the likes of Adams and Bogut.

Part of me wonders is Gobert was more valuable a couple years ago when there was more of a dearth of post players, than he is now with a lot of good post players coming in. Davis, KAT, Porz, Adams, Embiid (maybe?!!), Jokic, Drummond etc etc.

He's still very good of course, I just wonder if the increased talent at his position could lead to some devaluation in his stock.

QS is running much more pnr style of what we saw the Euro teams running in the Olympics. The ball handler is penetrating deep toward baseline and then either passing behind the defender after pulling both the help and his man in, looking for a backdoor cutter or 3 point threat in the corner or on the wing, or using the defensive over compensation of this to dish to the screen and roll man. It's a modification of Steve Nash's search dribble with more of a suicidal fate/

The ball handlers have done a pretty good job of sucking in two defenders and it's getting Gobert some great free throw opportunities (because he's not strong enough to finish through contact).

So guys... What of Gobert's super duper offense stuff ? So far what I see is the same player : massive defensive presence, limited offense and shaky FT shooting.. Still worth his contract tbh because of how he anchors our D, but as for the new O...

He's been better at getting position under the basket for lobs. I know he's limited offensively, but I do feel he contributes.

So do I, properly used he can be a decent enough contributor on O, which is all is needed considering what he brings on D, my point was just to say that some got overly enthusiastic after a few preseason games about his "new O" whereas he is still the same player and improvements are bound to be marginal.

He's been scoring more than 10 pts a game.

Win!

Thank you for your insight. I know I can't be the only person shocked to discover that Rome wasn't built in a day.

His offensive game has definitely improved.

So has his FT shooting...Not saying improvement is impossible, my point is that we shouldn't expect anything spectacular..

I think he has been setting much better screens. Not pretty, but a huge part of any good offence.

Pretty bad outing from the charity stripe today - 6/14 - and they even went grab-a-Gobert for a while in the fourth. Overall he was fouled five times and went 4/9 in the fourth, fortunately the game never got close enough for it to matter. However, it was his first game this year shooting under 50% from the stripe, hopefully this was an aberration rather than a regression, because it's the only meaningful improvement he's made at that end of the floor this season.

^ agreed, saddest thing about this game was the 6/14 FT shooting. I hope he can get to 70% this season, that would be a really nice mark to reach

He's much better ft shooter. Even last night when he had a rough night from the line his form looked fine and he was close on most the misses. He has been setting better screens. He is better at crashing towards the hoop after the screen which sucks defenders in. The threat of an easy lob or the threat of him being in easy position for the rebound is opening up the court more than last year for us. He has shown a few more offensive moves but they are still limited but he will improve for at least a few more years every year.
