According to a new survey from the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution, more than half of Republicans believe the country should be a strictly Christian nation — either adhering to the ideals of Christian nationalism (21 percent) or sympathizing with those views (33 percent).

This point of view has long been prominent among white evangelicals but is spreading into almost all reaches of the Republican Party, as exemplified by the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling.

It is also closely linked with authoritarianism. According to the survey, half of Christian nationalism adherents and nearly 4 in 10 sympathizers said they support the idea of an authoritarian leader powerful enough to keep these Christian values in society.

During an interview at a Turning Point USA event last August, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said party leaders need to be more responsive to the base of the party, which she claimed is made up of Christian nationalists.

“We need to be the party of nationalism,” she said. “I am a Christian and I say it proudly, we should be Christian nationalists.”

Aside from appearing as a B grade celebrity in a couple of Christmas films, how is Donald Trump in any way demonstrating Christian values?

edit

He is an annoying, dim, gobshite, idiot, who annoys the crap out of me, that is consistent with every person who within the first ten minutes of meeting them mentions their religion.

Trump was following Jesus' example of keeping Mary Magdalene around when Trump kept Stormy Daniels around. Trump and Jesus are practically the same. They both like hookers.

They’re not making a secret of this. They know that the media is so focused on Biden’s age and helping Trump win because he’d be good for ratings. So they can be bold about their agenda and unite the people they want to unite for the CN agenda without fear of alienating normal people who aren’t in tune with politics. This isn’t subtle at all:

I mean, the 3 Americans (myself included) who watch PBS know. But the millions who have their opinions shaped by Joe Rogan, social media, and mainstream news outlets certainly won’t hear Jack’s comments.

Nor will they hear about Flynn:

To my Mormon friends on this site and in Utah, think your religion counts as the one religion Flynn describes? *Maybe* Christian nationalists are merely using your votes to destroy democracy and then will destroy you once you’ve worn out your use? It wouldn’t be the first time in history that’s happened.

I know I know Biden is old or something.

Just an FYI to LDS people in Utah, most "Christians" do not consider you to be Christian. And when you descend into Nationalism of any kind there is going to be an ever narrowing hierarchy of what it means to be a "true" national.

If people don't know, every brand of nationalism is exclusionary in nature. There is the "nation" which is "us" and there is that which does not fit the definition for that nation which is "them." So when there is white Christian nationalism in the U.S. you are "us" if you are white, Christian and have natural citizenship (the further back the better) in the U.S.. Any of those qualities that are less than make you less of a true American. Being LDS is going to make you a second-class citizen in a Christian Nationalist U.S..

Excellent post

I’ve been saying this for a long time. I recognized the rhetoric from the tea party as being the same as the John Birch Society. Anyone born and raised LDS in Utah would’ve been familiar with their rhetoric. Former church president Ezra Taft Benson served as a megaphone for their conspiracy, paranoia, and narrow view of conservatism. For those who don’t know, the JBS believed Eisenhower was too liberal. Ezra Taft even called him a commie plant. They claimed that the CR movement was a communist plot. And in time, they even turned against Reagan, claiming that he was a socialist. Now, they’ve captured control over one of the nation’s two political parties.

So many areas of American life in which one can seek context for our current history. Christian nationalism is one. Matthew Taylor is a senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies, in Baltimore. His focus these days is the Christian Nationalist movement, and its influence on the events of January 6th. Has a substack focused on the subject, for anyone interested. His most recent book, “The Violent Take It by Force: The Christian Movement that is Threatening Our Democracy” will be published in late 2024.

More of that trump style hyperbole and extreme talk. So much fear.
"the left is loaded with demons" just like in Nazi Germany: "I don't think it's people anymore; I think you're dealing with demons talking through people."

Dude thinks I'm a demon. I mean Demons go help push cars up snowy hills on steep streets that are by their houses right?
Demons volunteer at their local elementary school right?
Demons go to the humane society of Utah just to take dogs out of their cages and on walks right?
Demons feed the homeless on thanksgiving right?

Maybe we need more demons?

Btw, I highly recommend going to the humane society and taking the dogs on walks if you are dog lover like me.
It's awesome.
This is the beauty I took last week. She was so fun to spend time with.
You might risk being called woke or a demon or something but I think it's worth the risk.
