GM Larry Riley said that the Warriors may start building for the future if they fall further out of the playoff race.
The Warriors are 11-17, putting them four games out of the final playoff spot in the West. Riley said he's not quite ready to give up on the season. "The clock is ticking," he said. "No question." Beat writer suggests rookie Klay Thompson and shot-blocker Ekpe Udoh as candidates for more playing time in the second half of the season

can you imagine us if GS fall to seven seed and Jazz will play better after ALLSTAR break and lose pick to Minnesota, it would be fun to get two lottery picks this year but this scenario with NONE can happen.

....with 11 and 13 pick UTAH JAZZ select Jeremy Lamb and Myers LEONARD or NOONE and stay with bell and harris.

Who honestly did not see this coming after Kwame Brown and Mark Jackass?

I don't see how "building for the future" will affect their record all that much. Curry and Ellis are still going to get their minutes, as will Lee. Giving minutes to Udoh and Thompson instead of Biedrins and Wright may actually IMPROVE the Warriors.

What does concern me is that GS is in the same situation as Utah, i.e. they've played a lot more home than road games. With Lopez back, NJ should start to win more games, so they're no longer a lock to finish with a worse record. Detroit is also playing well of late. I think there's a good chance GS finishes at 6 or 7; if that's the case, we just have to hope for teams to move ahead of them during the lottery.

I wonder if building for the future means trading Ellis?

Like the Jazz?

When they first hired jackson, i thought at the time it was one of the strangest hirings id ever heard of. At this point, i have no doubt he was hired as a patsy. I think Utah will have a very difficult time getting their hands on that pick. Their best bet is if they actually end up with one of the seven worst records themselves.

Im not too worried about losing our own pick, but having both those picks as assets would be huge for our rebuild.

We WILL get their pick. Even with the rookies getting more time they are better than the teams below them.

Charlotte - 4-27
Washington - 7-24
New Orleans - 7-23
New Jersey - 9-24
Toronto - 9-23
Sacramento - 10-21
Detroit - 11-22
Milwaukee - 13-18
Golden State - 11-17
Cleveland - 12-17
Phoenix - 13-19
Minnesota - 16-16
Utah - 15-15

I think out of those teams above there WILL be 7 teams worse than Golden State. 12 Teams are battling for those last spots not counting Golden State. I think pretty much 5 teams are almost a LOCK that they will be worse than Golden State as well, with Detroit and Sacramento being a good chance of being worse.

I'm not too worried at this point.

That and Clevelend without Varejao is not very good.
Phoenix, Utah, and Minny are better than G.S. though.

The crappy part is that even if GS is 8th worst, they can still improve in the lotto and get the 6th pick or something.

Got to rep you for this one. Was about to say the same thing. Wright has been bad this year. Glad i did not take the bait in my fantasy leagues. Biedrins is very disappointing. The one thing that would guarantee them a better record is if they do sign Fes like they were going to do. :)

No they can't. That's not how the lottery works. In the lottery you can only move up to #1, #2 or #3. If that doesn't happen you can only slip down if a lower seeded team leapfrogs you. The 8th worst team cannot end up with a pick #4 through #7 under any circumstances.

Good to know. Didnt the Cavs with the Clippers pick really move up last year?

Yes they did.. to #1.

The way the lottery works is its a lotto for 1-3 then it falls in order after that. Lets say you are slated at #4 but 3 teams with better records (10 - 12) get picks 1 through 3. Your pick would now be 7.

This is correct.

As far as the gs playing for the future every other team will also start playing for the future also.

With one very obvious and painfully close exception.....

It will be interesting to see where the two teams are at when they meet on March 17th.

All true, but to give a couple more examples...

If you finish with the 5th worst record, you could get the #1, #2, #3 (anyone can) OR the #5, #6, #7, or #8.
If you finish with the 8th worst record, you could get the #1, #2, #3 (anyone can) OR the #8, #9, #10, or #11.
Short version is you can get top three, the pick you were slotted for, or you could slip up to three picks.

So GS could finish 5th and end up with the 8th pick. That would suck for them but it would be great for the Jazz. I think it is too early to tell where anyone is going to be picking.

My only hope is that KOC steps in and saves Ty from himself. Jazz HAVE to trade away some of the vets like Bell, Howard, Miles, Jefferson and Harris. None of those players are in the long-term plans of the team. So KOC needs to get rid of them now for whatever he can get and then Ty will be forced to play the young guys and/or the players the Jazz get back in trades.

I just have to believe something is up. Why did the Jazz sign Carroll, only to have him remain inactive? Has to be at least one trade coming after March 1st.

Well, they sure didn't lay down tonight. Big win over the Clips. Looked like GS was going to fold after going down 98-95, but the Clips apparently went the last 3:22 without scoring a point. Have to hope the Warriors can get a bit closer to .500 so they'll continue to play tough and not go into tank mode.
