the above trade that did not happen, Kessler for a 26 or 27 pick and mathurin is interesting...but, I think having a Kessler in the West is absolutely paramount to winning. He has to be retained this offseason. Have to be able to defend Chet and Wemby in the West. I like the trade overall if we keep our pick this year. If we are able to nab another scoring guard and keep Kessler, foresee some good things for the Jazz

I think the right question is would the JJJ deal not have been available in the summer? And if so, would it have cost more/less.

I reserve my vote till I see if we keep our pick. If we don’t then F. If we keep the pick and it’s 5-8, B-. If it’s top 4 then an A. Also depends on how we use him and if we keep Kessler

The part I'm still unsure about is just how good I think he is as a player. His level has been so inconsistent from season to season. A reasonable way to look at this would be to take averages or look at it in a time-decayed way. If you take that approach, doesn't look that great bob. But if we chalk up his inconsistencies to the turmoil around and we get him at peak performance I'd be very excited. If we get the player he's been this season or even something in between this season and last I will have buyer's remorse.

I think it would not have been.
Just a gut feeling

There for sure would have been a lot more competition over the summer. A lot of teams are holding their powder dry for Giannis. All but one are going to be disappointed. Also, teams that miss out on the top 5 this year could use a for sure lottery pick as enticement. We did well.

So difference between B- and A is almost entirely a matter of luck/non-luck -- something we have very little control over?

Possibly, but I really don't think anyone was going to beat our offer by that much.

That is why I give the deal an A. We are going to be good next year regardless if they screw us in the lottery again or not. There is no universe where we were tanking again next year. The Jazz took the desperate need for a top 3 pick off of the table. That has great value for me.

Even if we get the player we are dreaming about we have the luxury of bringing them along in the manner we desire in a fully formed system.
