Would say Jazz did good
Got young all star caliber big man that can defend
Got two young guards that can defend better than what Jazz have
 
I gave it a B+. JJJ’s a real asset. How good of one is the question which keeps this lingering right between an A+ and C+.

I’m not worried about getting the pick. We have the 6th worst record right now with 35 losses. That’s four more losses than the Mavs and six more than the Grizz and Bucks. I really doubt all three teams pass us, when we’re actively trying to tank.

I give it a incomplete.

Retaining the pick is key to this making any sense at all for me.

We xould have given lower rated firsts. The Grizzlies are a restart and there arent very many teams that can pick up JJJ. I think the Lakera were our competition and they didnt have picks to give up.

We gave up on Walt who I really like and who we gave up a first to rent for 4 months.

Taylor... meh. The rest was all junk.

We received the best player in the swap which is a really good thing. We didn't give up anything too valuable other than the mystery of a potential lottery ball bounce.

But if we gave our 26 pick up, I will want Ainges turtleneck jowels on HHs wall.
 
When most teams are being stingy on firsts we were generous.

Also, if the Pacers included Mathurin + 2 unprotected for Kessler and we lose Kessler because someone throws crazy money at him... either way you look at it, that had potential to be a haul, ESPECIALLY if we could have had a sniff at another 26 pick.

Here's my thought process:

Grading a trade or a series of trades hinges on what happens in the future. What happens in the future is a matter of probability. Any matters of probability mean that you have to accept the reality of uncertainty and the possibility of substantially different outcomes.....

A lot rides on how well JJJ fits with the roster. Given how much he makes, the jazz need to get as close to realizing JJJ's peak as possible. This means he'll need to get back to his defensive dominance and expand his game in a few ways (e.g. a bit more passing from the elbows and further out, dribble handoff actions, etc.) If this stuff goes well, and the fit looks dope, then this trade gets a high grade. What are the chances that things go well? My early estimates are around 65 to 70% right now; and I think there's a fairly good chance that these developments will take some time, too.

As other people have said, the final grade will also be determined by if the jazz keep their pick this year and the player that the pick produces. What are the chances that they keep the pick? I'd say the chances are much more likely than not. What are the chances that it produces a valuable player in the effort to move up the league hierarchy? Much better than most draft classes.

There's a very high probability that 3ish years from now the Jazz will need to use assets to move off of salary and re-tool. I'm glad they've stocked up on 2nds; and I really hope that Ace and this year's pick become excellent pieces that grow into larger roles.
 
I gave an A.

JJJ is the right kind of player for us. The armchair GMs say "wrong timing", but an actual fact is you dont get to choose the timing. Timing is 100% about opportunity and when it presents itself. We dont know who is gonna be out there next offseason, and now we saw a guy that fits and we made the move.

They will figure out a way to keep the pick. There are other teams who are also tanking and this may get really wonky, but we have more at stake than just moving up 1-2% in lottery odds.
