Note: It appears the Jazz passed on something similar to a 5-8 '26 pick or unprotected '31 pick + unprotected '29 pick + Benedict Mathurin for Kessler per Jones/Clayton reports
There's no way to know exactly what happened, but Jones is as good a source as you can get.
I'd have traded WK for this kind of package... specially if the intention is to keep our own 26 pick.

I think the right question is would the JJJ deal not have been available in the summer? And if so, would it have cost more/less.
Being the Jazz, if you can grab the player you want without selling your soul, you go Nike.

I grade a B.
Not a fan of LM, JJJ, WK lineup, I don't think it works. If the trade for WK was there I'd have done it, kept Landale for now.

Possibly, but I really don't think anyone was going to beat our offer by that much.
We don't know what new assets would be available for teams in the offseason. Every team gets at least one more first rounder to offer. Even the most asset poor team in the Clippers will have assets this offseason.

I think the most reliable information we have is:
  • Chris Haynes saying 2 unprotected firsts were offered by Indy for Kessler
  • Tony Jones saying the 2026 pick was not part of the Indy offer
  • Tim McMahon saying the Indy offer for Kessler was not as attractive as the Indy offer for Zubac

So difference between B- and A is almost entirely a matter of luck/non-luck -- something we have very little control over?
Grades on level of strategy or stupidity. We absolutely can get a top four pic but that’s based on what this team wants to do. We absolutely can tank may cost a few dollars but outright trading for this dude and losing our pick is outright stupidity and dumb ***-ery

I can't really tell what you're saying, other than that you think the Jazz would be stupid to lose the pick, which is absolutely not part of the question I asked.

I don't think there are that many teams who want to pay JJJ next year and would be willing to give up a huge offer for that right.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we got him and don't think we overpaid for him, but I just don't think his price would have been significantly different in the summer.

I could be wrong.

Makes total sense because Zubac is currently the better player (not saying Walker won't overtake him, possibly as soon as next year) and is on a very attractive contract for the Pacers.

Apparently teams are going to max Kessler who hasn't played in a year, according to this site, so I don't see why JJJ wouldn't be pursued.
