Huge tanker advocate super tired of tanking myself.
I guess that's exactly what happens to everybody when a season or two are lost because lack or decision on tanking hard from the very beginning of the (re)building process.
Tanking is easy when you're already bad. It's hard work when your team is worth another 10-15 wins and trying to hold it back. At some point you need to make the move.

I landed in at a B-

- The value wasn’t bad, but not great either
- Questions about JJJ’s level give high variation in performance
- Fit is pretty good, but not perfect
- We desperately needed defensive talent
- It makes it harder to tank
- Concerns about contract
- No grade inflation here

I think the whole 'jury is out, let's wait' is not the point of this thread.

knowing the current landscape, and the probabilities that loom, I give this trade an A.
- major star in a position of need and in a skillset of need, at the perfect age.
- a star who would not be available any other way
- at a crucial juncture for this team
- acquired late enough in the season that keeping our pick is possible, we can lock players down similar to Anthony Davis and Trae Young
- gave up assets that weren't that impactful. Two meh first rounders in a **** draft, and a good pick in 2031. Guess what, you will need to part with good picks to make trades sometimes!

This is a franchise-shifting trade, i like the assertiveness. Moves like this are what small-market teams need to do in order to win championships, especially in an era where draft lottery odds are flattening.

Trades becoming bad after players have a freak injury are a different matter. With where things stand, i love the trade, and love the additional two players we're bringing in. Us not finishing in the worst 8 doesn't make this trade bad, rather it makes our front office garbage for not doing what other teams are already doing after similar trades.

JJJ isn't a "major star". Hell, you could argue he hasn't even been a real star this season. Averaging 19 and 6 on meh percentages, negative offensive EPM on a struggling team that didn't have enough scoring to begin with (red flag), 15 PER (career low), 57 TS%.

On the other hand, he's clearly a plus defender, which is obviously important, but plus defending isn't what pays you $50 million per year in this league. It seems the Ainges are gambling that the Jazz is a great fit for JJJ offensively and that he can rebuild his value.

Jazz could have done worse
Glad they did not get Davis, Harden, Paul, Morant, etc.
JJJ is still a good young player that will make the Jazz better

If we get the JJJ from last year or three years ago, that is a true star player. If we get the JJJ from this season, two years ago, or something in the middle…buyers remorse.

When you are really bad you don't need to tank.
To tank is a decision you make when you are not that bad.
It's a decision. It depends on you and only on you.
You decide to battle the games you can for 45 minutes.
That's it.
Tanking is not the opposite of development.
