Grade the Trade: Mitchell to Cavs

How would you grade the trade for us?

I am torn between A+ and A. In essence we got the Gobert trade for Mitchell too. The only reason I have hesitation is whether or not we could have gotten even more from NYK.

MIN 25 = CLE 25
MIN 26 swap = CLE 26 swap
MIN 27 = CLE 27
MIN 29 < CLE 29 (Cleveland pick is unprotected, MIN is top 5 protected)
MIN 23 <= CLE 28 swap
#22 pick in 2022 draft(Walker Kessler) < #14 pick in 2022 draft(Ochai Agbaji)

So if we were elated by the Gobert trade, I have no idea why we wouldn't be about this one... This is a pretty amazing return and fits our priorities and goals in the short and the long term.
 
It was preemptive and gives a glimmer of hope for the future. Another season of Donovan would just be procrastinating the inevitable and the return was heavily in our favor when looking to the future. The fact that for now the Knicks lose out on a player who wants to be there puts it over the top.

The way you broke down the picks is interesting and I tend to agree. The players we got in the Donovan trade blow away the players from the Rudy trade though. Not even close.

He did but I have serious doubts about this. Woj is CAA represented and IMO this was damage control he delivered for his CAA buddies Leon Rose and Wwilliam Wesley. Ian Begley had a report at the time(early-mid July) that this package was demanded by the Jazz and rejected by the Knicks, which is the opposite to what Woj is reporting now. It's weird to say that but in this case I trust Begley's report more than Woj's simply because it was done so much later and conveniently it was done right when the Knicks and their CAA execs were being slaughtered in the media for not doing enough to land Mitchell.

This. Also, have some ****ing pride. Why would you leak to the media that you offered way more earlier in the process than the final offer you declined? Leon Rose is a huge clown for that.

Yeah it paints a weird picture because if that's really how the negotiations unfolded, Leon let his pride get in the way of a deal getting done. No other reason you'd decline sending less assets than you had already put onto the table.

Even the B Knicks offer is better than the Cavs A offer. We don’t know exactly what was on the table from the Knicks after the Barrett extension, but neither did the Jazz. They just got sick of the process so they pulled a trigger on the first thing that met their nominal demands (3 unprotected 1sts).

I still think they could’ve gotten 2 unprotected, a 2028 top-5 protected pick, another team’s protected pick (or two), a swap (or two), and Fournier/Quickley/Toppin.

Jazz would’ve returned less win now talent and earlier picks, which is better for a clean tank and rebuild.

But whatever. I get it. If Donovan’s passive-aggressive “leadership” and proclivity to leak his displeasure does to the Cavs what it did to the Jazz, then the deal levels out some. But the Knicks were gonna miss the playoffs with Donovan next year and I really would’ve liked that pick for a kickstart to the rebuild (and another one of their too-many 2023 protected picks).
