Pretty shocking, really.

Eight owners signed a petition that demanded Stern address the small market/big market financial disparity they felt was a serious and growing problem. Obviously, they didn’t need to write him a letter like he was their local representative in Congress; he works for them. They did so to make a symbolic point and then released the letter to some media outlets to make sure the issue became public.

It read: “We are asking you to embrace this issue because the hard truth is that our current economic system works only for larger-market teams and a few teams that have extraordinary success on the court and for the latter group of teams, only when they experience extraordinary success. The rest of us are looking at significant and unacceptable annual financial losses."

The authors of the letter were Paul Allen of Portland, Herb Simon on Indiana, Bob Johnson of Charlotte, George Shinn of New Orleans, Larry Miller of Utah, Michael Heisley of Memphis, Glen Taylor of Minnesota and Herb Kohl of Milwaukee.

Johnson and Shinn have since sold their teams and Miller has passed away, giving way to his son, Greg. But the situations in those markets haven’t changed.

I'm confused. The letter was signed by LHM, not Greggy boy.
 
Sure it was signed by LHM, but obviously there is an NBA lockout going on right now. Apparently this was spurred on partially by the letter referred to in the article and Greg Miller champions his father's cause. It's interesting, I think, how the "Occupy Wallstreet" movement has permeated into even further reaches within our society.
 
Socialism is GREAT for sports. There are only 32 teams (or so) and they are all working towards the same goal. The NFL proves socialism is the way to go when it comes to sports. Outside of sports? As long as you are on the end of socialism that gets to make the rules, socialism is good. It sucks for everyone else.

How so? Not trying to attack, just want further explanation because I'm trying to understand why people are so enamored with the current system.

Am I the only one who feels like certain levels of inequality are okay to a point... Obviously, going to school to become a highly-trained specialist should come with some kind of reward, but to what point does it become excessive? What about the amount of "good" a profession does for society?

Sorry to blabber... I just get exasperated at explanations like "this proves that blah blah is good and blah blah is bad" without any further explanation.
 
I think very few people are enamored with the "current system" of the same teams winning the championship year after year, or the economic system...except for the obvious teams and bazillionaires.
 
wait. . . . . socialism? Isn't that supposed to be where the Government takes significant control of private property/business/production to pretend to take care of the people while winking at their elitist buddies who pay for re-election expenses?

yeah. . . . I know. . . the government is an expendable tool when the elitists can get their way directly.
