With all due respect to Mr. Jobs, probably MNF was the greatest invention/development/creation in my life to date. I am not smart enough to articulate how big this was for our generation. YB can probably add more to this, but where I lived we received two games on Sunday. There were no post game shows or comprehensive highlight shows. You read about the games in the paper the next morning or next afternoon. When MNF came on the scene it also brought the innovation of the halftime highlights with Howard Cosell. This was without a doubt the finest few minutes in TV each week. Apparently, Howard did not prep, simply narrated on the fly. In the early part of my childhood, mom would make us get ready for bed and bring our pillows and blankets out on the floor and we used to try to stay up for the halftime highlights. Always made it and promptly crashed some time in the 3rd qtr.
God it was awesome.

In a "God we're old" reply, kids these days cannot understand Halftime Highlights. We didn't have ESPN or half hour local sports shows showing all the highlights ad nauseum. There were no "game breaks" and maybe a few highlights at halftime, but nobody cared because we were too busy staring at Phyllis George's breasts. We looked forward to MNF Halftime Highlights so we could see the OJ Simpson run or the Mean Joe Greene tackle or the Ken Stabler pass to Cliff Branch that we read about in the morning LA Times. All this with great music and Howard Cosell's voice inflection. We all talked about how we hated Howard Cosell but now we look back on him with fondness. Growing up on the West Coast, I didn't have to worry about staying up late because halftime usually hit around 7:30. Monday Night Football was more than just a game, even if the opening graphics were done by the same animators who did Schoolhouse Rock. We didn't need no song from Hank Williams Jr. to know that it we were ready for some football. Our internal clocks let us know.

I was in Vegas in August. Had to hit a Wal Mart to get some supplies. Sitting there doing a charity signing all by himself was Cliff Branch. Nicest guy in the world and nobody knew who he was as we spent about 1/2 hour chatting. Got some cool pictures and he let me try on a Super Bowl ring. He knew all about the college football scene in Utah. Said he would run through a brick wall for Madden and that Bilitnekof taught him everything he knew and the reason he lasted in the league so long.

What direction do they go now with the MNF theme song? Go young and pay a ton of $ to Justin Timerlake or Black Eyed Peas? Or do they stick with someone a little more seasoned like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
If they go hip-hop, Ice Cube would do it. He actually has already written a Raiders theme song.

I'm all for showing respect, and don't think that Hank's comments were appropriate. Stupid in fact. But to cost him his job? Seriously?
We're becoming a bunch of pansies that can't say anything in society without fear of being imprisoned, fined, or fired.
Just like the race thing, we're going so far the other way to "equalize" things that now we're punishing whites from the middle and upper classes.
We're going so far to become PC, that now you can't say anything.

Yes, but this is much more likely if you are a public figure.
We're already all the way down this slope. Employers can fire you for almost any reason that does not have to do with you being in a protected class. Speaking out publically in a way that embarrasses the company is a reason. You have a right to speak. You have no right to a job.
I don't think Hank Williams Jr. will have any trouble making up for this income. Lots of people will offer him concerts now.
