So after this thread, I decided to check this out on amazon prime. I am most of the way through the first season, and I can honestly say it is the darkest show I have ever seen on TV, and in many ways darker than any movie I have seen. The episodes take on a "freak of the week" kind of format, which can get old fast, but they keep it new by intermixing Hannibal's involvement, and the underlying story of Will Graham's burgeoning insanity and Hannibal's clandestine behind the scenes moves make it very interesting. And trout is right, it does kind of make you feel like you need a shower, but no way in hell am I getting in the shower alone after an episode or 3. The icing on the cake are Hannibal's dinner parties.
"Hannibal, this is wonderful, what am I eating?"
"It is tongue of lamb."
"I like it. Kind of chewy."
"This was a particularly talkative lamb."
Cut to a scene of some guy begging for his life for 3 seconds, back to the guests nearly orgasmically enjoying the meal. The sadomasochistic undertones are just crazy.
(also by dark I mean like 80% of the show happens at night, or in rooms and office buildings where people refuse to flip on the ****ing light switch. I get you want the tone to be, you know, dark, but good hell, I work partly in an office environment and no one tries to write a letter or type on their computer under a 20 watt bulb in an antique lamp with all the shutters closed and no other light entering the room. that is a bit much.)
