I think purposely targeting civilians is wrong. But I also think it is acceptable to sacrifice thousands to save millions. IMO Hiroshima and Nagasaki are fairly low on the list of atrocities from WWII. It was the ugliest war ever fought and those 2 strikes probably saved 10 times the lives they took by ending the war that much sooner unconditionally.

Then let's start wars and plagues to avoid population boost related resource struggles.

We also nuked cities full of people and did it twice to show the damn Russians what we had, what it could do and that we had more than one. Those bombings had as much to do with showing the world our new power as it had to do with getting Japan to surrender.

We easily could have used the first one in an unpopulated area and said unless we get unconditional surrender we'll use the next one on a city.

The bombs did not set an example of the power, it set a milestone for nations and generations to hate the US and seek revenge. That's what unbalanced war efforts do. As you've said, they could be threatened without the carnage, but after pearl harbor I doubt anything else would stop them out of extreme measures. But this mass destruction weapons are something else. I think even the US themselves stopped and thought "what the **** have we created?!"

You're probably right. I was writing a longer response but it felt like I was pushing it. I'm an outsider to this history so there are natural limits to my perception of things.

It sent a message to the world, and specifically Russia, of American power.
It ended the war with Japan in an absolute manner.
It did anger some nations and create a bias against America
It did signal a new era in mass destruction weapons
It did alter world security in a massive way
It did change military policies, stances and alliances

These single two acts had a massively huge impact on the world at the time and have had a long lasting affect on how things are done in the world even to this day.

The history of atrocities committed by the Japanese prior to WW2 and through their rampage down through south east asia and treatment of POWs and civilian populations on a massive scale beggars belief. This coupled with their absolute resolve to fight to the very last man to the death in defending their homeland means that although it was an incomprehensible thing to drop the atomic bomb i don't see much of an alternative. It has only been relatively recent history that has seen parts of Japanese society acknowledge and take full ownership of some of their atrocities. And yes of course nothing is completely black and white but given the other potential outcomes ... well we can only be thankful down here for the American intervention and eventual victory in the pacific.

That act was a disgrace to humanity no matter how you see it. Wars used to be of skills, tactics and strategy. Now it's who has the 'guts' to press a button.
