Haul for D-Will vs Haul for CP3

It depends on whether Favors reaches near his potential. If he turns out to be the best player in either trade, you'd have to say Utah got the better deal. A good trade is about the quality of player you get back, not the quantity. Obviously, where the Hornets get draft picks is a factor as well. However, most people thought that if Favors were in last year's draft, he'd have been the #1 pick. In this year's draft, he'd probably be a top-3 pick as well with Drummond and Davis.

Besides the general draft luck of picks panning out or not to further the luck of the draft is the year/strength of the draft on the year the trades are made, can't really control that so not fair to factor that in but it does have an impact for sure.

Especially in light of getting Billups, the Clippers were in the power position and ended up giving up too much. If they gave up Eric Bledsoe instead of Eric Gordon, then that would have been a perfect trade for both sides. I might have also tried to protect the Minnesota pick for the Top 3.

Comparing it to the Utah deal, the Hornets did a bit better, as it gives them more flexibility than the Jazz got, in that Kaman is a large expiring deal and the Minnesota pick compared to the GSW pick is unprotected.

And then Stern would have threatened your family, and you realize the protection on that pick isn't really all that important :)

On the surface it looks like NO might have gotten the better deal. But there are 3 things that stick out to me that may turn it the other way. #1 Eric Gordon well be a RFA at the end of this year. And if he just excepts his QO he well be a FA and the end of next year. If NO sucks this year and is going into a complete rebuild project with the Draft picks (Minnys and their own) then why would he want to stay? Who knows who is going to own the team after this year and who is going to want to play in NO as a FA with the team in flux like it is now. We got Favors out of the deal and pretty much got a 5 year project to see if he is as good as people think.

Second is that Kaman is an expiring. Is a good player but there is no way he stays with the team past this year. I know that NO wants the cap relief and flexibility to build a team. But again Who is going to go there as a FA with the way things stand right now.

Third is the Draft pick from Minny. On the surface this is the crown jewel of the trade considering were this pick could end up. But what if the Wolves have a halfway good year? What if the pick ends up being in the 9-10 range like what happened to the Jazz with the NY pick?

In the end It looks like the Jazz and the Hornets are about the same rebuilding project the Jazz are just one year ahead of them in the process. In 2 years the Jazz well have gobs of cap space and only Favors, Hayward, Burks, Kanter, and there 2 draft picks this year under contract. NO well have about the same. So to me well have to see were both teams are at and what they end up with after the next 2 years to really say who got the better deal.

In my view the Jazz got a slightly better deal because Favors is a stud. The nets clearly did not understand what they had in favors and underestimated his value. Getting Favors, Kantor, Harris plus another pick gets me really excited for the upcoming season.

That being said I think the Hornets also got a great deal. Eric Gordon is an up and coming star. The unprotected pick from Minnesota is worth its weight in gold, because Minnesota is going to finish with one of the five worst records in the league, if not the worst. The caveman can also play and he is very under appreciated. I am not as high on Aminu (sp) but he is young guy and on a rookie contract. That is a great haul for Chis Paul who by the way looks 15 pounds heavier than his rookie picture and whose shooting percentage dropped to 46% last year.

Frankly I'm tired of hearing how the Lakers got screwed by Stern. They didn't. Stern essentially owns the Hornets and has the right to find the best deal. The Lakers proposal was crap compared to the Clippers. Lamar would have whined and pouted his way out of New Orleans, or he might not even appeared and crap-canned the whole deal. Kevin Martin is older, less efficient and more injury prone than the better Eric Gordon. Scola's a good big, but he's over 30 and Kaman is taller and better. The point guard Dragovic (sp) is barely second string worthy. Overall the Clippers offer was much, much better. Now the Laker lovers can cry that the deal was approved by they Hornets GM, by Stern always had the final say. The only possible legitimate gripe the Lakers have is that the NBA should not have owned the Hornets and they are right. It was and is a conflict of interest. It was also waived by every other NBA team, including the Lakers. Get over it national media, Stern knows what he is doing and he made the right call.
