People need to calm down. Especially you, my little Nicky.
16m is a ridiculous overpay for Hayward, but I wouldn't be surprised - nor think it's terrible - if the Jazz match, assuming they believe they can lock up Alec and Kanter as well.
This is a young team and realistically, we aren't going to be poised for a championship any time in the next four years. During those four years we need to see growth from the young corps, hopefully a burgeoning Exum that's escalating toward superstar status, and a couple of future (likely lottery) picks that may become bonafide stars themselves.
By the time 2018 rolls around we'll have a sense of whether or not Hayward is all that his paycheck would suggest (doubtful), in which case we extend him, we lock him up on an extension at a lower price, or we let him go and plan out our paydays for Exum and whatever other burgeoning stars are developing.
The only thing this deal really seems to waste is the potential for more asset accumulation through cap space, and I'm just not sure that we're going to have Golden State opportunities every year that would make sense for us.
