Hollinger's Thoughts on what it take to be a contender

Well I still wonder who the guy will be when the Jazz need a tough basket. Watching the NBA playoffs, many games come down to who can make big shots in the 4 quarter. Do the Jazz have anyone who consistently proven they can be the guy? The only guys who have shown that ability sometimes have been AJ and Millsap. Two guys everyone wants to trade. I certainly think defense is the key to winning a championship but the Jazz still need more talent. OKC overwhelms other teams with their talent. Jazz need our young four guys to mature and grow together but they also need more help. This is the main reason why I was hoping for the Jazz to get both picks this year. Jazz lack scorers especially off the bench. What makes OKC tough is that Harden, Westbrook and Durrant can score 30 pts on you. Right now the Jazz don't have that capability.

It would be nice to get a solid PG who can both shoot and distribute the ball. It would be definitely nice to get a stud SF and then move either Hayward or Burks to the bench as our sixth man. Having too many shooters is a nice problem to have. I hope KOC addresses a few of these issues either through the draft or FA. It is time to start building a team and to play the young guys so they can build some chemistry.

Favors has made a bunch of clutch plays. And part of young player learning process is learning how to hit the big shots.

He didn't really say that the Jazz won't have premier scoring talent, merely that at this stage it doesn't appear evident that that will happen (which I agree with).

Hollinger is absolutely right in his assessment, btw. Favors and Kanter is a real nice place to hopefully be building around (even if the big time scoring never comes for either, they do what your bigs primarily must do).

Just want to add that we may need to trade him, because soon he will be a free agent, can we afford to pay an undersized big that doesn't want to come off the bench, and doesn't want to play less then thirty minutes. And if Kanter develops he will have to come off the bench.

Maybe. I would think KOC has a pretty good pulse on that situation though. From reports the team appears to be hesitant to include Sap in any trade talks, so maybe that is a sign they believe they can and will retain him.

Millsap has done everything asked of him. I see no reason why he'd suddenly become a bitch, and I see no reason why the organization has to do anything but have some ****ing respect for the man (unlike some lagging brains in the fanbase).

Perhaps they should have asked him to grow a couple inches.

Millsap has said a couple of times at least that he doesn't want to come off the bench. I'm not showing him any disrespect. Calling it as I see it. If our best chance to win a tittle is to build a top defensive club, unless Millsap is willing to play the roll he had when Boozer was here then fine, but his lack of size will hurt us defensively playing over 30 minutes a game. Millsap has also proven he breaks down and can struggle for weeks playing those minutes because he's undersized. He's a hard worker, that along with his lack of true size causes him to get worn down.

When it comes to respect, I'd be willing to bet that Sap and management(and fans, for that matter) have a different definition of the word. When it comes time to re-sign him, just how much do you think we should pay him? Anything less than what HE thinks he is worth is going to feel like an insult to him, and players almost always overvalue themselves. Considering the way things went last time, with his uncle acting as his agent, and the things that were said, I'm not overly optimistic on re-signing him.

All things being equal, I'd prefer to keep Millsap, but if it comes down to losing him for nothing, just to chase another first round asskicking, I'd rather try and get some trade value out of him. If the Jazz were serious about building a championship team(don't believe they are), they certainly would consider trading BOTH Al and Millsap. I'd prefer that to keeping them both and watching a re-run.

Millsap coming off the bench is years away. Kanter will take Millsap's spot, and that is 2-3 years down the road.

I think we need a PnR PG to be good. This is why I keep coming back to the idea of trading for Jarrett Jack. I think Favors could be an excellent scoring threat if paired with the right PG.

Of course I'd love to have Deron back, but, I think he's outside our price range. I don't think CP360 is coming here either. But, I think we need someone that can run the PnR. Harris ain't it.

Further, we need to get rid of Jefferson. That dump it down to Jefferson offense is not doing the team any favors. We need an offense built around movement and screens; teamwork.

So, there is my recipe for success. Trade Jefferson, bring in a PnR PG. Maybe both at once. Maybe not.

I think Harris runs the pick n roll good enough. I think shooting is our biggest offensive need (besides obtaining wing superstar, which isn't happening) at the moment.

Harris runs the PnR?

Not sure if serious.

Ok, a bit of an exaggeration. But, we almost never ran the PnR last year. I'll bet Hayward ran about as many PnRs and Harris did. Probably ran them better too.

Teams always need shooters, that's true. And the Jazz are a team that REALLY needs shooters. But, I'd by far prefer an upgrade at PG for Jack than an upgrade at SG for Korver (for instance).

I'm not sure we at Jazzfanz know what we want.

I think Favors and Kanter can both become 20-pt. scorers, and I'm still holding out hope that we can get a 30-pt. scorer out on the floor.
