Hood is more important than you think

I really like Hood as well. The only thing that bothers me about him is he gets injured often (it's always something about him that will have him sit out games) and the way he high dribbles most the time. He needs to work on that. I've seen him do it when I watched him play in the summer league last year and during the season. But other than that, I think he'll be great.

Hood is the main reason I don't want a wing on this draft. Booker is the one guy who I think could be special, if he were there, I'd probably pull the trigger, but outside of him, I want no part of any wings.

Just wanted to get that out there. Hood is going to be stronger and more valuable than most people think, imo. I can see him being the shooter/scorer we need while also providing solid D and even decent play-making ability. I have said it before, but my comp for him is Alan Houston. I think Hood has a very similar game to Houston. I very much look forward to what he will bring in his 2nd season.

Here are some interesting numbers from Rodney's last half of the season.

After he came back from his injury he averaged 12 pts, 2.2 boards and 2.1 assts with 1 steal in 24 mpg on 46% from the field and 42% from 3.

For his last 17 games, when he really started to take off, he averaged 14 pts, 2.5 reb, 2.5 ast, 1 steal in 27 mpg on 47% FG/40% 3PT.

That puts him at 19 PPG per 36. Along with over 3 asts and rebs per game, and 1.3 steals, at a 40% clip from 3 and nearly 50% FG. And that is his rookie year. This kid will do nothing but get better and better. I am so excited to see what a season without injury (hope and pray) and with solid minutes (say 30 per) will do for him. I think within a few years he will surpass Hayward as our top player, and might already be better than Burks, especially with his defensive effort and how effortlessly he seemed to put things together. Can't wait for the season to start!

EDIT: I took out his obvious "rookie" games, when he scored under 5 pts, which by the way were only 5 of his last 30 or so, and got this for averages:

After injury: 14 pts, 2.1 rebs, 2.3 asts, 1 st, 49% FG, 45% 3PT
Last 16 games: 15 pts, 2.4 rebs, 2.6 asts, 1 st, 48% FG, 42% 3PT

And per 36

After injury: 20 pts, 3.4 rebs, 2.9 asts, 1.2 st
Last 16: 20 pts, 3.4 rebs, 3.2 asts, 1.4 st

One more EDIT: Alan Houston

Here is the stat line for Houston in 2000-2001 when he played 78 games and averaged 36.6 MPG, and made the all-star team:

18 pts, 3.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, .8 st
45% FG, 38% 3PT

I can completely see Hood surpassing this.

Compare Hood and Houston rookie seasons

AH - 79 games, 19 MPG, 8.5 PPG, 1.5 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.4 SPG, 40.5% FG, 30% 3PT, 82% FT
RH - 50 games, 21 MPG, 8.7 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 2.3 APG, 0.6 SPG, 41.4% FG, 37% 3PT, 76% FT

Spot on. Great post. Couldn't agree more. Frankly, I like Hood in our starting lineup more than Burks. Many here overrate Burks and underrate Hood. Hood is already better than Burks. We overpaid Burks. Hope he proves me wrong.

So when is SLC erecting a statue of Dennis Lindsey?

Gobert/Hood back-to-back late first round picks. Holy ****.

Pls just snag Tomic and a wing, or draft Frank and call it a season. Where my boy BabyPeterzz at? #Letthecakebake

Or... Dl, pls just snag whoever you want because you are smarter than all of us combined. We trust you.

The Allen Houston comparison is terrible. Stats wise, perhaps. But stylistically their games are NOT similar.

Houston was 6'5" and ran around screens like JJ Reddick does now for the Clippers. I enjoyed watching him for years. Hood for me compares more to Scottie Pippen lite wrt his on the court expression. He is 6'9", slightly less of an athlete than others in the same position and more of a methodical game. A bit of a combo player with the ability to stretch the floor, drive, and a disciplined defender.

I think that the Jazz see waiting on Hood as a better alternative than going after free agents. DOL spoke on 1280 and said (paraphrased) 'we love our young players. We like what they have to bring. We just got done watching film on other players that we could put in that spot and we agreed unanimously that we prefer the player that we have.' My impression was that an improving Hood was a better value for the price than an injured Wes Matthews, pricey Demarre Carol - Kris Middleton... reading through the lines.

Coach Q said Hood has no weakness in his game. Such a bold yet true statement. Hood can play already. He can defend, pass and shoot. If he can stay healthy we've got (another) star in the making.

Defend? maybe at an average level. We need an very good perimeter defender.

I know he is well-regarded here. The title of the thread was mostly to go at the idea that we need a stronger wing player which has been floated around here as of late. Yeah if we could get a Kobe (but not THE Kobe, he is old and broken) or LeBron or whatever then hell yeah go for it. But I think Hood has real star potential. It would not surprise me to see him as our go-to scorer and putting up 25 ppg within a few years. With Hayward and Favors playing support at 16-19 ppg, and Gobert at 10 PPG and 15 RPG with 3.5 BPG and maybe Exum finally out of his shell with 8-9 assist per game and 8-10 PPG with 2.5 SPG (3 and D with PG skills in that frame, watch out NBA), and Burks leading a cast off the bench with a solid bench big (new guy? free agent?), Jingles, and an upgrade over Burke. Booker and Cotton for energy relief for our main guys.

Just, wow.

I don't think we need a stronger wing than Hood. I think we need another strong wing.

I'd like to see Burks take over backup PG. I'd like to see Ingles replaced eventually. I can see situations where we put only one of Gobert and Favors on the floor surrounded by small ball(wings that can spread the floor). Look at the Spurs or Warriors. Two true Bigs, one or two 3-4 tweeners(basically a big wing), and an array of solid wings.

^This kind of thing seems to be what Snyder was talking about when he first came here. Given the wing depth in the draft and this philosophy I think the chances we draft a wing are pretty high.

I'm with you. I think Hood will be huge for this team as an elite deep shooter that teams have to guard. Decent D and he can drive on his man if given the chance.

This team was in desperate need of shooters and Hood may be our best one. Wonder if DL will pull off another fantastic grab in the late 20s like he has the last two years.

U are underrating Burks. U realize he was hampered a lot of the hear by the shoulder and kept him from being the aggressive player he was the year before right? Despite the bum shoulder he still improved his shooting from mid and long range shooting. Personally I'd like to see him start while Hood is our 6th man just because he would have a Ginobili affect as to keeping the offense more relevant. The only way I want to see Burks playing pg is if we plan on starting him. We would be wasting his talent making him some backup pg.

I have to disagree with coach Q.
Every player has weaknesses. Im not sure what his free throw percentage was but I think it was kind of poor.

I don't remember him being great at finishing at the rim with contact
I can't remember him going for rebounds very often
I saw him struggle to defend against speed.
He dribbles too high (as another poster said)

That is nitpicking though. He isn't really bad at anything and the things he is good at he seems to be very good to elite at. And he was only a rookie who missed a lot of games

Plus he has the prettiest shot in the league

I think you misunderstand me.

How am I underrating him if I think he can cover backup PG mins and still be a part of the 2 rotation?

Doesn't calling for an expanded role for Burks show that I may be overrating him?

We could still start Burks although I don't think it should matter as long as he gets ~30 mins. Exum,Burks,Hayward,Favors,Gobert. Sub Hood for Exum, Burks slides over to the one.
