Hot Rod has Alzheimer's

I have been a long-time lurker here. I have been following the Jazz since the Salt Palace days and this website since the Jerry-Sloan-goes-golfing and I-saw-Boozer's-wife-at-Best-Buy threads. I had to come out of the shadows after reading Gameface's comments and offer a pat on the back for the class act post. Very sad news. I would take Hot Rod any day, even those days when his words where slurred a bit, over the current Jazz announcers. Godspeed Hot Rod.

It is a stretch. Latest info is that sleeping well is the best way to prevent Alzheimer's. https://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/21/us-poor-sleep-alzheimers-idUSBRE99K0WV20131021

Rubbish.

Like Moe said, the symptoms are very similar.

Ive seen it. Ive felt it. I believe it.

People can get away with drinking in their early years because the body regenerates more quickly. The older you get the slower that goes. Alcohol damages the brain. Its not really an argument. We are talking about a brain disease. Disease can come from some sort of unhealthy abuse.

Its not a stretch.

My grandfather was a big Jazz fan. He went blind for the last 10 years of his life. Because of Hot Rod he was still able to sit in front of the TV and enjoy the games with the family due to Hot Rod's style.

Of course, the play by play style that used to be the standard in the NBA has changed to have more banter and off-court information (with separate radio broadcast).

Hot Rod retired from television at roughly the same time as Stockton and Malone. No more yo-yo-ing, frozen ropes, belt-high dribble, old refrigerator, cow hide globe... It was a fitting end to a great era.
Wow, you brought back memories with all those terms, although you missed one of my favorites...leapin' leaner. Hot Rod and Chick Hearn were so much better than any other announcers; those two are in a class all by themselves. As many have mentioned, Hot Rod allowed the listener to "see" the game even over the radio. Alzheimer's is a horrible, horrible disease. Although his drinking MAY have contributed to it, that isn't necessarily the case. My grandmother developed Alzheimer's and she did not consume alcohol.

It is a stretch. There are proteins that are built up in the brains of people with Alzheimer's and alcohol doesn't cause that. If there were a definitive link it would have been relatively easy to prove. No one with any credibility would say "long term excessive drinking = you'll get Alzheimer's"

Alcoholism has more to do with draining the brain of important metabolites as far as I can tell. The only link between the lack of these metabolites and Alzheimer's that I've seen is that some possibly bind and transport the bad proteins out of the brain. That puts Alzheimer's before alcohol consumption, not after.

On top of that, the correlation between the two would be as easy to prove as they come. They have not.

Hot Rod will always be the best. His style was perfect. Shared all my favorite jazz moments with me. I miss him.

Major bummer. This disease scares the crap out of me.

Well, if you insist. Good luck with that. After all, it always ends well when you keep drinking into your later years. Ive never seen one problem when people do that.

Stop being dumb. There are a ton of health issues associated with drinking alcohol. Liver disease is pretty horrific. Being a drunk is pretty horrific. It isn't good for the brain. None of that means it is a leading cause of Alzheimer's. You think being drunk is like having Alzheimer's therefore drinking causes Alzheimer's, good for you. That's dumb, but good for you.

Best announcer in any sport of all time ever.

I HATED nationally televised Jazz games as a kid because it meant no Hot Rod, and the listen to the radio and watch the game at the same time thing didn't always sync up perfectly.

Anyone ever go to "Hot Rod Hundleys Place" ? I was too young.

on the app. square bizness.

I didnt sat "being" drunk is the same. Moe said that, or something like that.

Im simply pointing out that drinking effects the memory. Alzheimer's is a memory loss condition. Do doctors, or people who conducts studies know everything. No, they still dont enough. Studies barely mean squat. I see a new study that contradicts the last one just about every other day. So I see no reason to use that crap as a way of understanding something. These studies dont follow the person around their whole life and document every step. So how the hell can they say one way or the other what something does?

Everything is connected in the body. You start hurting one part of your body then it effects the rest. Especially if the region is the brain. Just because some study says its not directly correlated doesnt mean it isnt.

I mean cmon, this is commom sense. You damage your brain and it will develop problems. Weakening it one way might cause it to be more susceptible to disease and all sorts of problems. It doesn't have to be directly linked, or have to happen everytime for it to be the cause. Every person is different.

Do you not think it might have lowered the odds of this happening if he had not had a drink his whole life? Let alone abuse it well into his older years? I guarantee he had a better shot at avoiding this or at least pushing it further down the road if he had taken better care of himself.

But props to him I guess. He made it pretty far actually. Ive seen alcohol take the mind a lot sooner than this.

One thing I have learned about Hack is that he really, really does not like drinking.

Probly due to the Alcohol mishap that disfigured his face.

No I dont really like drinking. Not anymore anyways. I used to drink a lot. Only on the weekends. But it was a lot. I had a lot of fun with it. Used to be my favorite thing to do. But Im into my 30's now and it just isnt the same. You dont recover as well. It effects the memory big time and overall health too. It just isnt worth it anymore. I used to wake up with no hangover whats so ever. Now I feel like I fried my brsin when I drink. Takes like a week to fell better again. So I only have been having drinks about once or twice a year or sometimes none at all, for the last 6-7 years. I feel good too. Dont miss it at all actually. You'll see what happens when you get older. Its all funny to you now. Just wait.

Some people pull back when they realize its time, and some cant and they just push right on through. And it never ends well.

Ive never seen anyone who is older and is in great health that can drink regularly. It just doesnt mix. I have family members that it has destroyed their lives. I dont even recognize the person anymore. My Aunt in particular, she basically is brain dead because of it. It almost like she is soulless. Its not the same person I used to know. Everything about her personality changed. She can barely put together a sentence now. Its very sad.
