How is Exum looking?

He isn't a great athlete man. He has a good first-step, but that is about it as far as above average NBA athleticism is concerned.

Measurements don't mean jack if you don't do it in the game. Luke Babbit had a 40 inch vertical, which is probably top 5% in the NBA, don't try to tell me he is a top 5% NBA athlete.

You might be right, that's a thing that bothers me. He might actually be better athlete without the ball, which wouldn't fare well in the league... I guess we'll see soon enough... I want to see him get an NBA body. I think Alec Burks is a good comparison for what I want him to look like in a couple of years time. They had similar bodies at the time of the draft:

Alec Burks: Dante Exum
Age: 19 vs 18
Height w/ shoes: 6'6'' vs 6'6''
Weight: 193 lbs:196 lbs
Wingspan: 6'10'' vs 6'9.5''
Standing reach: 8'7.5'' vs 8'7''

Right now Alec is 211lbs and his body looks great on his 6'6'' frame. If Dante can fill up and mature the same way I hope this will help him more confident attacking the basket.

I think the athleticism is there; it seems more like Exum doesn't know what to do with it.

Yeah, but if you never figure out what to do with it, it doesn't mean ****.

Exum is more fluid/smooth than he is explosive. Like it or not, athleticism is (generally) heavily measured in how explosive you are.

We will see what he can do when he adds more muscle and stability to his body.

I think he'll figure out what to do with it eventually. Just not any time soon.

He can be explosive off the dribble, although he doesn't demonstrate it as much. He doesn't seem to have much explosiveness vertically, for sure. It's hard to tell how he'll be once he bulks up, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect his explosiveness to be a strength down the road.

gotta work on that vert. that few more inches off the ground will help him alot. ferocious dunk instead of a difficult layup.

Thanks doodz.

Lets keep this thread going all year.

Kinda maybe the only thing I care about, unless I order League Pass. Then I'll be watching every game.

Key is running tons of screens.

If the on ball defender stays with him he can use his length and extension to get a decent look and only requires him to correctly anticipate the help in which case he can still use his length to make really low risk skip passes and drop offs.

If he's getting switched on he needs to utilize some trickery(footwork isn't there yet) to get him out of position and if he's got half a step on his defender he can do no-step off hand layups easily with his length.

And of course he needs to develop his shooting to a point where he's getting these driving lanes consistently.

First few games he looked better than expected. Then he slowed down and finally collapsed (8 TOs and such). This could be about three things: 1. He is not ready physically. 2. It's a totally new experience to play 4 games a week. In overseas leagues, it's usually once a week only. 3. He is not as good as people thought before the draft (tier-1 talent).

Overall he has shown he's got ELITE potential but potential means you're not good enough. Looks like the coaching staff is doing their best o help him develop. So it's all up to him. He needs to work tremendously hard, has so much to work on. As other posters pointed out, I'd start with ball handling and mid-range game.

I would like to make an observation about Dante. I think his "handle" is gonna be fine. I believe he has the requisite skills to have a " great handle" (ie. dribbling skills, court vision, BB IQ etc.). It's not been going that well though due to being young, inexperienced and totally new to the NBA. His shot does need to improve so....... as Allan Iverson says "Practice, practice, practice, it's just practice! What? Did i misunderstand Allan?

How does Exum look? A picture is worth 1000 words, as they say...

He's looking pretty much exactly like this
