How many steals per game will the Jazz average next season?

*Mods please fix my moronic uppercase S in the title thread.

With the new additions to the team, the thought occurred to me a few weeks ago that the Jazz should start raking in a few more steals per game, which will probably be needed to create fast break offense/ maximize Rubio's talent to pass in transition. Last season the Jazz forced the 2nd fewest steals per game of any team: 6.7 while the Warriors forced the most at 9.6.

I thought I'd try and project how many steals we'll average per game next season by taking into account potential contributions of some of our new guys in addition to our returning players.

Rubio's highest steals per game season was 2.4 and last season he averaged 1.7 steals per game.

Thabo's highest per game season was 1.7 and last season he averaged 1.5 in only 25 mins a night.

I project Mitchell to average around 1.5 a game if he gets 25 mins per night. I think he could average over 2 though.

Ingles averaged 1.2 steals per game last year, career best.

2 years ago, Favors averaged a career high 1.2 steals per game (Side note: This largely took place before douche Bogut took him out and he's never been the same since. That was the game Kane Fitzgerald gave Haywood his first ever T and we should have won but a bunch of **** happened. We kind of fell apart once Faves went out and the refs f'd us over a barrel so the Warriors could go 73-9. And then the next day that asian Bay Area reporter wrote that every team in NBA history would have lost that game in SLC, but the Dubs prevailed which was a testament to their status as greatest team ever. Anyway...) Faves averaged 0.9 steals per game last season.

Rudy doesnt really generate many steals. 0.6 per game last season. 0.8 was his career high 3 years ago.

Hood the exact same as Gobert last year: 0.6. His career high was 0.9 2 years ago. A healthy hood could get back to this 1 steal a game number.

Dante should get more steals than 0.3 which was last years mark. Damn. He did average 0.5 per game pre ACL tear/ year 1.

Jerebko gave the Celtics 0.3 steals per game last season in 15 mins per night. but his rookie year averaged 1.0 steal a game in 27 mins for the pistons.

Udoh career best was 0.7 steals per game in 11-12 (20 mins per night). his average is around 0.5 steals a game if getting 15 mins.

Joe Jesus averaged 1.3 steals a game back in 05-06. Last season he averaged 0.5.

Last season Raul gave the Jazz 0.5 steals per game in 8 mins. and 0.8 per game was career high in rookie year.

So lets say Quin has a rotation of 10 guys each night and lets say the rotation is

Rubio/Exum
Hood/Mitchell
Ingles/Thabo
Faves/JJ/Jerebko
Gobert/Faves/Jerebko

Add each at career best steal per game (Mitchell projected at 1.5 in 25 mins which feels modest) = 12.5 steals per game which is 3ish more steals per game than GSW who are averaging 9.6, 1 more steal per game than the 2nd place Wizards at 8.5. JJ seems to be the guy that throws this off most cause he won't average 1.3 steals per game next season; No way.

Now lets add up the steals per game based on what guys averaged last year and DM projected at 1.5 per game which = 9.1 steals per game which puts the Jazz in 2nd when compared to what teams averaged last season (+2.4 steals per game when compared to what they did last season), 0.5 behind Dubs and 0.6 ahead of the Wizards. Also keep in mind, I expect an increase in steals per game from Rodney, Dante, and Faves if they are healthy which could boost us up past GSW. I also expect Rubio to get up to around 2.0 a game on a defensive minded team so we should be bathing in steals... But then again... oh yeah... our pace of play...

Our slower pace of play will no doubt impact this (We only averaged 93.62 possessions a game last year, lowest amount of any team... FWIW, Rubio's T-Wolves were at 97.11).

It will be interesting to see how our slow pace of play affects the steals per game number, but at the same time a team's steals per game should not be the end all be all when you consider pace. It's got some sparkle to it, but what's more relevant it seems is how many steals do you get per 100 possessions or what percentage of defensive possessions do you get a steal.

Taking into account our additions, our slow pace of play and what I project for DM , Faves, Hood, Dante and Rubio, I think the Jazz will sit around 8.0-8.5 steals a game which if nothing else should put them from 29th to top 10. Not too bad.

Btw Lindsey said on 1280 today that he wants the Jazz to average more blocks and more steals.

What do you think. Jazz top 5 in steals next season? How about #1?

Anyone want to bet me a steak dinner Jazz will averaged less than 8.0 steals a game next season?

Damn that's a lot of work for a thread. Nice job.

I think this is an interesting topic, we added a couple of guys this off-season that will be great at getting steals, but from what I've seen our defensive philosophy leans toward containment rather than gambling for steals. I wonder if we change that up a bit this season to facilitate getting easy transition buckets.

Hell I'll bet ya a steak dinner I got plenty. Already got the pronghorn cuts in the freezer. Unless you prefer venison, cow elk, lamb, or goat. Hell I'll git plenty of that come soon enough.

What you offerin tough boy?

screw it I say the Jazz are going to average 13 steals per game beating out the 12.9 the suns averaged in 77-78.

That's 16.7. Round up to 20 because we're the ****ing Jazz.

Rubio 2.5
Mitchell 2.0
Hood 1.5
Ingles 1.5
Favors 1.5
Gobert 1.5
Sefalosha 1.5
Exum 1.2
Udoh 1.0
Johnson 1.0
Burks 0.5
Jerebko 0.5
Neto 0.5

Is that you David Locke?
Good study there. Thr steals per game will definitely go up. I'm excited to see this fast transition style.
