How Much Could Tyler Herro Match Donovan in Utah?

If we trade Donovan, I'd want it to be to a team that can give us some lottery picks...any picks the Heat trade will be in the mid-late 20's.

I would tend to agree. Heat can reload... but as long as they are unprotected they have potential to be valuable. Riley won't be there forever.

If we did this I'd kind of hope they re-route Herro to the Kings for #4 or Detroit for #5... maybe get some sweetners too. Then you hope to nail the pick. Herro is only cheap for one more year.

Who knows.

Butler is going to age out at some point. Maybe he changes team. Maybe Donovan leaves to NYK when his contract is up. The Heat are a very good franchise, but slip ups can happen. They have a year where there arent any big name FA's out there that want to switch teams and all they have is Donovan, they could be bad by 2027

In any rebuild trade we would be wise to grab far out firsts from teams that assume they will always be good... those tend to become more valuable than you think.

That's a pretty solid trade package. Especially if we can get picks and other useful pieces like Strus and Yurt7. Ideally if you trade your franchise player, you'd wanna get a young star who you can build your franchise around like SGA for OKC or Hali for Pacers. Not sure Herro is franchise player material like these guys but that's about as close as you can get

So the Salt Lake Tribune put together some trades ideas and one of them was Donovan for Herro/Robinson/Strus/Yurtseven/Tucker/27th pick this year/2024 Heat Pick/2027 Heat Pick.

Obviously I want better picks, but it got me thinking: How much different are Herro and Mitchell really?

If we gave Herro all the touches and opportunities that Mitchell got in Utah, could he match Donovan? How close could he come if he didnt? Could he potentially do better (he is 22 to Don's soon to be 26)?

Even without changing the roster up (which Utah would assuredly do) you would have this team:

Conley/Butler/Forrest
Herro/Clarkson/Robinson
O'Neale/Strus
Bogey/Tucker/Gay
Gobert/Yurtseven

That team is going to be a top 5 offense again, and the better depth (PJ Tucker would be huge in the playoffs) will lead to better defense. You could also make more "win now" moves to shore up the roster (replace at least 2 of Clarkson/Conley/Bogey) to improve the defense. The pick at 27 could net you a solid player. Maybe someone like a Jake Laravia. Maybe Jalen Wilson is still available. Possibly a Beachamp/Liddell/Terry/Braun
I am afraid Duncan Robinson would be included before tucker as tucker has a player option and his next contract will be his last.

Let's revisit this now that we've done a Rudy trade. Herro isn't as good as Donovan... but I was shocked when I looked back at his numbers this season. If he takes another slight improvement in his production he won't be a whole lot different. I think we have maybe under-rated the guy... he's closer to Donovan's class than JC's class... only 22. See if he will extend for 22-25M a year... make him the focus of the offense and we likely still tank next year but his value may be pretty decent at draft time.

The heat package isn't bad imo... at very least I'd put the rumors out that we are in the deal zone on this one and get the final and best offer from NY. Once Don goes to Miami they aren't getting him so time to show your cards.

They're very different. Herro has never been a #1 option with Butler, Lowry and Bam on the team, and I don't think he's capable of being one. Herro is closer to prime Alec Burks than Donovan Mitchell. He's been a complementary player.

I’ve been trying to tell people lol.

21/5/4 with 40% from 3 on 6.7 attempts is ****ing nice.
