One thing I'd like to add to the article:

There are some bloody geniuses that work in the real estate acquisition department ("genius" here is highly restricted). In all my time in South America, from small town to small town, the LDS have their churches built in the spots that are certain to accrue value as long as this whole global economy keeps chugging. Amazing locations. Well scouted.

Luv ya man. let's just all remember that what nobody thinks we still have to be humans to each other, and that includes having love in our hearts and caring for anybody and everybody. We can all be more tolerant, this is a great time to exist and diversity makes us.

Way to step up. Yes viewing people or groups as being "evil" can be a dangerous thing. Once branded that way it makes it easier to excuse behaviors people normally would not take part in. I saw an interview a while back in which an author mentioned that a couple of decades ago that while there was a two party system, there wasn't the division there is today. He said that somewhere along the line the respective parties started viewing each other as "evil" and that deepened the divide between the two parties.

Dude, seriously, I only notice one person bitching in this thread and throwing the "evil" card around. If zombie said the exact same thing about the Catholic church and its expansive land holdings and finances would you consider his comment "evil?" I wouldn't. I don't think he was trying to bash or call our church evil. Thicken your skin.

It's absolutely fair game. I don't mean to come off as a jerk (sorry Zombie) but come on, give me a break. If you read the article, it clearly says why the church built it. Plus, it's not like the church doesn't spend millions/billions in humanitarianism, etc. I mean, the church founded Salt Lake City, and them spending money to make the city a better place and giving the citizens more to do, is pretty cool. Was it a lot of money? Yes. Can some people think they're vain for building it? Absolutely. But with that said, you're lying to yourself if you deny that what I was saying about people trying to make he church look evil every chance they get doesn't have some validity to it. Or doesn't it?

Total: $1.13 Billion in 25 years. Yes, they reached a billion, but it took 25 years.

Roughly $45.2 Million/year, but I bet it has increased as the years have gone on to account for inflation.

Does the church do a lot of good? Absolutely. As do its members who contribute tens of thousands of hours a year. However, it's easy to see why people might be critical of the church's financial priorities or not understand their financial decisions. Relax.

That's not even close to what I'm suggesting. To me it's a matter of proportion. From the LDS.org Humanitarianism fact sheet "From 1985 to 2011, LDS Charities provided more than $1.4 billion in
assistance to nearly 30 million people in 179 countries".
So on one hand we have about one and a half billion dollars towards aid over a period of over twenty-five years, and over three times that amount on a shopping center in the last decade alone. This doesn't seem out of wack?

I can get behind this. I also want to make clear that although I am usually on the other side of these kinds of discussions from you, I feel that if whatever religion works for you and makes you happy, then cool beans. My whole family is mormon and it works for them and I am genuinely happy for them that it does. That doesn't, however, mean that I agree with everything the lds church does, and it doesn't keep me from discussing my disagreements when the subject comes up.
