I have been doing some reading about what it takes to build a champion. I was going to post the article but my iPad is being a pain in the back side. So here are my opinions on how to build a championship.
I agree with the article that a team needs to be 8 1/2 players deep. Now 9 thru 12 are still important but 1 thru 9 are what a championship is built on.
1st - a team has to have a dynamic scorer. Some one that can take the team on their shoulders. Kobe, pierce, durant, James, wade. These types of scorers. These are also very hard to come by. not sure who on the jazz will take this lead. It was Williams but he is gone. Figure some one that is first or second all NBA.
2nd - a defensive stopper. this is the person that will frustrate the other teams best scorer. Disrupt their offense just makes things a nightmare. These players can get steals or block shots. Think bowen, Pippen, artest. Again not sure who this guy is. This is the reason I want biyombo he can be that for us.
3rd - a sixth man. This is a versital player that comes in off the bench. He can play multiple positions. He will generally get starters minutes. The is the jack of all trades. Think odom, Ginobili, kukoc, Gordon. I think the perfect player on the jazz roster to play this part is Hayward. I think he can be a starter but he does so much and is so versatile.
4th - a point guard that runs your system. As it has been stated many times great point guards aren't as important to win it all as a good point guard that runs your system. This player, in my opinion lives by the motto make everyone better. Think fisher, Kidd, rondo. I am not sold on Harris here I think Watson is a better fit. I will give Harris 1 more year.
5th - specialists. The first specialist is the 3 point shoot some one that can spread the floor and make other teams pay for doubling. Think korver, miller, Bowen, battier. The league has plenty. I was hoping this would be cj but we dont have one. The second is a rebounder. This person can come in and just flat outbrebound. Think rodman, Evans, haslam. I really thought millsap was our guy here but he hasn't been very good.
6th - inside presence. This is a person that you can throw the ball inside and the can score down low. Get to the free throw line. Makes playing half court offense bearable. Think gasol, Garnett, bosh. I think Jefferson is a good fit here as could be favors.
7th - coach. This is some one that can manage a game. Make good substitutions. Create match up problems. Exploit weaknesses. Most importantly they have the respect of the players. Scott Brooks, Johnson, Sloan, Carlisle. Not sure what to think of in Corbin will also give him 1 more year.
8th - great fans. This is probably one of the biggest. It makes the players play better. It provides energy. Home court advantage is huge. I think esa is one of the best for this.
1/2 - dynamic duos. For every batman there has to be a robin. For evey Kirk a spock. Think Kobe - gasol, Duncan- Robinson, Jordan - pippen, pierce - garnet, stockton - malone. This is an identity the jazz lack.
Now players can have multiple parts to this equation. Kobe is alsoma great defender as was Jordan. Add more tell me how stupid I am doesn't matter just want to hear what you all think.
