I like Burke. I think he should be given 1st opportunity to start based on experience and where they are right now. I will not be surprised if by the end of Training Camp Exum's passing and athleticism vault him over Burke. I fully expect Dante to be the starter eventually. Trey is just not a very good starting PG. Too much dribbling and looking for his own shot, Not good at running pick and roll, and a terrible defender on top of it.
.
I want Exum to earn the spot. I just want to see him do it ASAP. I think it's going to happen in the long run anyway.

I think Trey will start, someone said that Trey is a proud guy, I would agree. they'll be forced to find some kind of chemistry. I think Trey is going to end up trying extra hard for the first part of the season to show everyone that he should be starting, and leading this young squad.

As for what I want, that depends on how they perform! We have a whole new system under a new coach. I'm sold on Snyder, I like how he is honest with the camera, the media, and himself.

I may get flamed for this, but why not start Burke at pg with Exum at sg playing backup mins say 15 giving Burks over 30 minutes as the sixth man, if half way through the season, and Exum is out playing Burke in a two pg system, then give Exum more mins and reduce Burke's minutes.

If Exum doesn't look like he is ready for big minutes keep him in that rotation or move Burke into the starting lineup.

I think this would be a great situation for Exum. Give him the confidence of being the starter, while basically being a backup. Plus earning more minutes can be a motivator for him to play well, and not putting too much pressure on him. Burks continues to be sixth man, but playing over 30 minutes basically makes him the starter minutes is, and finishes games.

One of the many reasons you bring Exum off the bench: confidence.

You don't want to ruin his confidence. Let him come off the bench, in limited minutes to start the year 10-15 mins a game. Once his conditioning comes around, his confidence will grow. Once he dominates the second unit, SLOWLY increase his minutes and time against starters.

The one thing you don't want to lose with Exum is his confidence. He is so quick, and such a good passer, he could dominate on speed alone, offensively and defensively.

Don't put him in a situation to get beat early. Play him sparingly and only against matchups he will clearly dominate.

And yes Fabtrey... Burke shooting 12 times as a rookie is a problem. If he's shooting that much as a rookie... God only knows how much he will shoot as a sophomore in the nba.

Fab, the future isn't about Burke it's Exum! Deal with it or leave! Hell! You aren't even a jazz fan. Orangello has been right all a long. Burke is just not a starter, at least not a starter on a championship contender, but Exum has that potential to be just that.

Star him playing 15 min or come off the bench for 15? I'd rather start him for 15 min and groom him to be a superstar. This way he earns minutes being a starter rather then earn minutes being a backup, and possibly never being a starter in year one. This way we give him a boost of confidence while not putting too much pressure on him. Making him a starter sometime down the line means he starts off as a starter with more minutes vs the best the nba has to offer, adding more pressure, then as a more seasoned player there's more pressure to play well if he falters then he loses confidence.

Flame on!

I would like to see how Exum plays during the preseason with the other guys. He's definitely going to be exciting to watch.

I don't think he should be starting right now because he has a lot to learn (as any rookie does) and we have a PG. But I suspect as Exum gets more comfortable and starts making plays the talk will begin again. It all depends on how Burke plays. If Burke sucks it could happen. If Burke has improved I think Snyder will have Exum at SG or play some back-up PG.

I think we need to see how Burke plays with the other guys also (to see if he's improved or not).

Maybe Exum could show he can play 10 minutes straight without hyperventilating before we crown him a starter. Let's face it, he hits his rookie wall before the first half is over. He will be great someday, but that day isn't today. Burke needs to start. He was given the job early, but he certainly earned it over the players available at the point. At the point where Exum consistently outplays Burke, then this conversation can be had.
Also, besides the conditioning aspect, Burke played MUCH better defense than Exum in Summer League. If people are going to get all giddy about "defensive effort get played," you cant hand Exum a big "get out of playing defense free" card right off the bat.
Finally, people demanding that others "leave" because they aren't showing the proper level of hate to our players can go screw themselves.

I disagree, framer. I've been one of Exum's biggest critics, but I thought he was fine defensively. Burke was fine defensively as well. Let's face it, we all know Burke will start, but if we have to decide between two guys who both struggle mightily shooting the ball, who are pretty even defensively, who are both pretty good passers/playmakers, give me the 6'6" guy over the 6'1" guy.
