What's new

I know I will regret this.. (car)

If they're metal on metal, he's probably going to need rotors, too. Plus, you're forgetting it's Trout here. I once had to go over to house and show him how to change his wiper blades.

Those things can be tricky, dammit!

I'm sure there is a member on here that could help. I'll help you if you want to drive up to Portland. :) Changing the rotors is not a big deal either. Rockauto has some really good pricing right now on a lot of parts.

Also, there are great message boards with "how-to" guides on many DIY maintenance. This was found after a quick search:

https://www.techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/brkjob/ You should not need to bleed the brakes for new pads.

Honestly, I only do my own maintenance because I don't trust the idiots at the stealership and I have more time to do things at night rather than wait for it to get fixed during the day when I have too much to do. If you want it done right, take the time to do it yourself.

As far as vehicles go, I personally will only buy Toyotas. I'm cheap, so I want cars with a high resale with minimum repair cost. I had a Chevy, Chrysler, Ford and Mazda, and they were all ****. I have had a few Toyotas, and never had a single problem other than regular maintenance (brake pads, etc.). I personally try to purchase vehicles that are manufactured at the Toyota Higashi-Fuji or Taharaplants. They have the best quality control in the world. I have had two Toyota's built in the states, and while I had no mechanical issues, they just did not feel as solidly built as their Japanese made counterparts. I currently have a 2003 4runner that just crossed 140k and it runs like it was new. I also have a 2012 Limited 4Runner, and it has been great. I think Trout can attest to Toyotas quality as well based on the miles on his Prius.

The best part about Toyotas are their resale. I had a Tacoma for five years and took a $3k hit from what I paid for it. Unreal.

The answer to the problem in the OP is simple. I've recently addressed it in my own life (albeit at a smaller scale). You get the nicest black Audi possible, and then call it a day. It's the black suit of cars.

Making this into some crisis of authenticity or meaning is stupid as ****. Sooo gawd damn stupid. It's a car. A car. Jesus Christo.

Why an Audi specifically?

dunno.

A full answer would involve all the "arbitrary" processes analogous to those that have elected the necktie has a formal object. A slick black Audi in LA is casssh.

Fair. A black Audi to me is kinda like picking up a pair of black Allen Edmonds shoes. A standard you can't go wrong with-- but is it necessarily the best? You can keep the understated allure of a black Audi with much more dramatic, romantic vehicles IMO. And I say this as kid who's loved Audis for decades (mostly from Le Mans & Rally history)

You appear to care about this stuff a lot more than me.

Actually, my very first word was "car", and I loved them all the way through high school. Built a couple with my friend around that time. By the time I was about 25, though, I couldn't care less... And now I honestly hate spending time in them unless I've taken a small puff and am listening to great tunes (and it isn't LA rush hour(s)).

But I think Allen Edmonds are more like Chrystler 200s. They can't quite get the luxury thing and lose the clunky ergonomics.

I'd drive the **** out of this.

I'd like to get one of these.

He'd need a ladder coming off the running boards to get in that thing.

I bet the running board raises and lowers. That big and at that price(I'm assuming really high), it certainly should have that feature.
