What's new

I really like Ty Corbin

I know the Jazz have been beating bad teams, but if the Jazz were horrid they'd be losing to these bad teams.

At least to some of them, anyway. I was pretty worried watching them collapse in those blowout losses. Losing is one thing, but getting blown out over and over can really get in the player's heads. Very happy to see them build some confidence at home, and then add to that with the road win. I still don't believe they'll be a playoff team, but I'll admit I'm starting to sip the kool-aid. Cautiously.

I'm not sure we can read too much into the rotations at this point. With the condensed schedule you can bet Ty cuts back on some player minutes to conserve energy for the next game and it has nothing to do with merit.

I just want to see continued development from the youngsters. And I am seriously hoping the Jazz finish 33-33 and MISS the playoffs. The Memo TPE combined with a lottery pick in a deep draft could be extremely valuable.

I want to see Burks continue to get minutes with Favors and Kanter. He can set them up nicely on shots when he drives. Jefferson and Millsap can get their own shots so it makes more sense to start Raja with them.

Burks has been playing out of control most of the time he's played, but when he's not getting to the line at a Kevin Martin-esque rate and hitting his shots, good lord does he hurt what the team is doing. His rate of putting up shots HAS to be the highest on the team, or if not, it's vying for it with Chuckerson and Chuck J.
Fact check time... my magic spreadsheet says the top 5 shooters/48min are Jefferson by a long way (24.5), then Catch'n'Jack (20.8) closely followed by Burks (20.1), then a slight gap, then Millsap (18.0) and Howard (17.6) close together. Then daylight to... this is interesting... Favors (14.7) ahead of Hayward (13.8) and Harris (13.6).

However, this only takes into account shots that count for stats. Burks is the leader in FT/48mins (just ahead of Howard) which indicate he gets a lot of trips from fouls on missed shots - add these missed attempts to his stats and he would clearly leapfrog CJ for second place in the shots taken count. So your perception of his shooting rate is supported by the facts. Given his 42% shooting percentage he could certainly exercise better judgement with his shot selection, other than when he is attacking the basket and drawing fouls, of course (where an improvement in his 72.2% FT% wouldn't hurt either).

However, in spite of his volume shooting, he is also fifth in the team in assist rate after the three PGs and Hayward. And fifth in rebound rate after Kanter, Favors, Millsap and Jefferson. So he may be a chucker, but he's not a one-dimensional chucker.

I love when numbers support what I see. And don't get me wrong, I'm actually pretty high on Burks (like many). However, I don't think he's earned nor has he shown the ability to have the green light that he plays as though he has. Like you mentioned at the end, he does some really nice and rather unique things, but he doesn't have to take plainly bad shots (off-balance [floating laterally, fading away] long jump-shots, or contested jump shots, or jumpshots early in the offense) to accomplish them. He really needs to just focus on getting to the cup on and off the ball, and spotting up from 3 (where I think he can at least be respected if it's spotted up and he's squared). Maybe the super-star off-the-dribble/mid-range slop will come with time. But not now.

I'm not sure if I find referring to the hoop as "the cup" so annoying because Mark Jackson does it constantly, or because cup is just a stupid description for a hoop.

numberica's wrong. the Jazz need somebody who can do more than catch and shoot, and Burks stats are good.
So much retarded in this post I don't even know where to start.

EDIT: I'll give it a shot.

1) I didn't say his stats weren't good.
2) I didn't say that I wanted Burks to become a pure catch and shoot player.
3) I would be wrong if I had asserted either of those things, but I didn't.

Was this a deliberate scarecrow argument because you have some axe to grind, or are you really that dense?

Just have to know if this was deliberate. I assume and pray yes.
