If the Jazz don't make the playoffs, they lose their pick?

Let's settle this now, once and for all. What exactly are the details on this?
What exactly is the criteria for whether or not Minny gets the Jazz first round pick?
If Minny doesn't get it this year, then do they get it next year? What about the year after?
In other words, are the Jazz destined to give Minny their next high pick whenever it happens, or is there an expiration date on this?

From what I understood it is top 21 (?) protected so if they make the playoffs there is a chance they lose the pick.

I know but I don't want to tell you. Everyone else can PM and I'll be happy to bring them up to speed.

Our 1st (Big Al):
T'Wolves receive the Utah's 2012 first-round pick (lotto protected in 2012 and top 12 protected in 2013, and Minn has option to swap picks in 2014 if Utah pick is 10 or lower. Otherwise Minn receives 2nd rounder.)

GS's 1st (DWill):
Jazz receive the Warriors' 2012 first-round pick, via Nets (Marcus Williams trade) (top 7 protected in 2012 and 2013, top 6 protected in 2014. If not received by 2014, Jazz will instead receive Warriors' 2014 and 2016 second round picks)

It's lottery protected this year don't know about the year after, so make the playoffs lose the pick miss playoffs keep pick.

I'm thinking the Jazz should have gone on a full blown youth rebuild this season.
They could have got another top 4 pick to retool for next year with.

Sending up bat signal to Kenwood.

my sources tell me that kenwood just got back from an international vacation and may not respond right away. however, he put this page together with the details: https://www.jazzbros.com/draft-pick-outlook/

Draft Pick Outlook
2012 draft
Utah first rounder – Conditionally traded to Minnesota (Al Jefferson trade)
2011 – top 16 protected, 2012 – top 14 protected, 2013 – top 12 protected, 2014 – Minnesota has right to swap first round picks with Jazz (top 9 protected) OR Minnesota will receive the Jazz’s 2014 second round pick to complete the deal.

Golden State first rounder – protected (Deron Williams trade)
2012 – top 7 protected, 2013 – top 7 protected, 2014 – top 6 protected or else switches to 2014 and 2016 Golden State second rounders to complete the deal

Utah second rounder – own pick

Looks like Kenwood agrees with NBAdraft.net (or vice versa), so I think we can take that as gospel. Thanks, Nerd and PrinceJL.

Bottom line: if we make the playoffs this year, there's an excellent chance that Minnesota gets our pick.

Umm, isn't it pretty cut and dry? We make the playoffs: MIN gets our pick, we miss the playoffs (have a top 14 pick): we keep it, right? Or perhaps I just did an awful job of picking up your sarcasm?

Nah. Colton is correct. In the new CBA they've bumped the playoff structure to 11 teams per conference because they were desperate to increase revenues after such a long lockout.

Jazz might not only lose this pick but their next three. That's the price they agreed to pay for an extra $10mm per year in revenue sharing.
