What's new

I'm perplexed...

With what exactly the jazz org. is trying to do.

1. We aren't making the playoffs, and that's a given.

2. I thought this was the year of discovery.

3. We are rebuilding, and this ain't no mystery.

4. As we all know, it makes no sence to win games.

Couple questions

1. Why does it look like we are trying to win, as if we have a chance in hell at making the playoffs

2. Why are Burks and Kanter coming off the bench? As far as I'm concerned we have no idea if Kanter and Favors together works or not, plus they haven't been given enough time to figure it out.

Also, I understand that you need guys like Burks or Kanter to be 6th men while having savvy vets like RJ and marv start, but we are neither a good team or destined to reach the playoffs! So what is the cotton-Picken-point to having these two come off the bench!?!?

I just want to know what the hell is going on in jazz land??

1 - I have no idea.

2 - Burks and Kanter come off the bench to make the game easier for them and give Burke and Favors and to a lesser extent Hayward professionals to make the game easier for them. We are trying to lose, but we are still trying to develop players.

1. So players should try to lose? Of course we're trying to win with whoever is in the game.
2. Burks and Kanter make perfect sense coming off the bench. This is very likely the plan for next season.

Minutes per game as of last night
Hayward - 36 mins/per
Burke - 31 mins
Favors - 30 mins
Burks - 27 mins
Kanter - 25 mins
Jefferson - 27 mins
Williams - 27 mins

I don't think that's a bad distribution. Maybe take 4-5 away from Jefferson and Williams and give to Burks and Kanter. That's my only complaint in terms of usage. I think Corbin has done well in that respect. Now in terms of an offensive and defensive system...don't even get me started!

What do I want to happen next season:
1. New coach
2. Upgrade Marvin and RJ as starters. Could be by inserting Burke and Kanter. I think it more likely the Jazz go with a FA and their draft pick.
3. Upgrade the bench. However you look at it, if the Jazz have 2 first round picks + likely bring in Neto, all they need to do is bring in one more FA to round out the team. Whether a couple of those players start or all come off the bench, that's a huge boost to the roster.

Assume Kanter and Burks off the bench:
C: Favors/Kanter/Gobert
PF: FA or DP/Kanter/Evans
SF: DP or FA/Hayward
SG: Hayward/Burks
PG: Burke/Neto/Garrett
+GS pick + 2nd-rounder

Switch it around if Kanter and Burks start. Either way, there are a core-8 (3 bigs, 3 wings, 2 PG's) and a couple more who get short minutes.

I think this year we have discovered that Hayward can not be a number one option. Kanter can not play defense and scrub centers have huge nights when he guards them. On the positive side, we have discovered that Alec Burks can drive on anyone and finish with the best in the league. We have found that Trey doesn't turn the ball over and is the best point guard we have had since Deron.

I have joined the camp saying Burks is better than Hayward and should be starting in front of him or Jefferson. Hayward does a lot of things but if your a SG you can't shoot 40% and 30% from 3. I am still baffled as to why Jefferson plays so damn many minutes and why Kanter/Favors was given up on so early. I think they could learn to play together and that if they had Burke, Burks and Hayward around them they would be effective. Or hell play Marvin, Burke and Burks/Hayward around them.
.
Just like with Millsap Corbin pigeon holes players and won't play them elsewhere. Marvin can and should be used as a SF more often. Hell I'd rather have him on the floor over Jefferson every time.
.
I have no problem with the players playing to win. And have never been all in on the tank. But there is no reason for Jefferson to be logging so many minutes. And it's almost criminal that he has started more games than anybody else this year. I said before this season that the only way this season fails is if Jefferson plays more than 15 minutes a game or if the other vets play instead of the youth (Marvin, Jefferson, and Beeds). So far even if he sits the rest of the year he will just about average that. So the season is already a fail and we have just passed the all-star break. Marvin has earned his minutes and I for one want him back. But Jefferson will not be back (basically his own words) and should not be playing.

I believe the factors above are a big part of the reason Corbin has yet to be extended. I believe if he was doing the Job Lindsey wanted, they would have extended him by now. I expect him to be gone this off season and will rejoice the day it happens.

If that were the case, then why hasn't Lindsay gone to Greg and get his okay to replace Corbin?

But Corbin's rotations are only one of the many problems with his coaching. The guy is just awful; I don't understand how he has survived this long.

I think the wanting to win thing is a culture thing. DL and KOC seem to feel the Pros of winning outweigh the Cons.

The title of your Thread made me think of this:

"We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed. Perplexed, but not in despair. Persecuted, but not forsaken. Cast down, but not destroyed." -Saint Paul

Besides the fact that I feel it has been a mostly productive year in Jazzland, the fact that most of the people on this forum that I feel are negative nancys and clueless anyway are having fits the whole year make this one of the best in memory.

No point mid-season. But it is very unlike the Jazz to go this long with a hanging head coach. Normally he would have received his extension by now.
