Jackpotting Around 52 - Uproar Theory, Tankxiety, Keyonte, and Trade Talk

But Hardy does not have mandate to try and lose.
Imo he shouldn't need one.
No one will remember the season where he got his team to 29 wins when they think of Will Hardys legacy.

If he were able to add a top 4 draft pick to his team then they might remember his legacy when he is going to the finals.
In other words, I have to assume he isn't an idiot and knows about the pick protections. He has to know about the amazing talent at the top of the draft. He has to understand than it's easier to coach a team to more wins with more talent on the roster.
If he knows all that then it would totally make sense for hardy to be on board with the tank regardless of any communication from the front office.

During the half tank years when we were trying to win Lauri played less than he is now. The difference is that Hardy had more options he liked to play back then. I don’t think he thinks 36 minutes is ideal, but he just doesn’t like his bench options as much. And who can blame him!

It has to come from the FO. He’s been a more than willing participant with whatever the FO has mandated him to do.
This should be the case regardless of the pick ramifications. We should simply not break our wildly mobile 7-footer who can get really hampered with nagging injuries. Period.

Hardy doesnt make that call. If FO says he jumps, he asks how high.

He was an absolute tank mastermind last season and sabotaged our wins more than any coach I can remember. We had Lauri and some other decent players (Kessler, Sexton, Collins etc) but managed to actually have THE WORST record in the NBA. That doesnt happen by accident. People got fooled by him so hard last year, that many thought Lauri was declining or fools gold. This season has shown that it was all a big hoax.

So yes, he does need a mandate. He is a company guy who is obviously pushing for wins because the FO wants him to live 1 game at a time and try and get the best out our guys instead of asking his help in the tanking business.

I think hardy decides whether Lauri plays 38 minutes or 32 and decides his rotations etc but we can agree to disagree. Maybe you are right and in the middle of the game ainge comes down and tells hardy "you better play Lauri for these last 15 minutes straight with no rest or you are fired".
Idk.

I will say what grinds my gears a bit on the tanking is strategy is why no one just does minutes limits for their stars.

Playing Lauri 28 mpg. The first 7 of the odd quarters, and the last 7 of the even. Then rest him in the grimey season. That seems like a smart strategy and that wouldn't draw as much ire.
This makes me think of the rigid rotations Sloan had around Stockton specifically. I can't remember the minutes exactly, but every single game you knew that at the like 8 minute mark of the 1st quarter, almost no matter what was going on in the game, Stockton was coming out and in came Eisley. Then, at the 3 minute mark, or whatever it was, of the 2nd quarter, Stockton came back in. It was infuriating at times because more than a few times it felt like it killed a rally or a run we were on, but Sloan was religious about it. Way back in my brain I can remember him calling time out when we were rolling, specifically to make his standard substitution and boom, rally dead.

Ofc Hardy decides how much Lauri plays. But what he doesnt decide is whether he is coaching to lose or not. Thats where he just does what his boss tells him to do.

His boss is obviously telling him to "do your best" and maybe also "help Lauri in his AS case". So thats exactly what Hardy does. He knows the pick things, he knows the standings, and they talk daily. The day Austin tells him "we gotta start losing" is the day Hardy starts helping him out on that front, but not one day before that.

What I'm saying is that if I'm Hardy I want a top 4 pick and I'm going to do things on my own to help get it.
Front office wouldn't even know. If I play Lauri 33 minutes instead of 40 then they wouldn't say ****.

Hardy wants to walk a tight rope. He wants to develop the players he has and not thrust too much failure on them. Agree or disagree with the approach, but it is what it is. I think Hardy has been great at development so I trust his approach.

We know the Jazz will blatantly tank at some point. Despite the constant moaning from the tank at all cost crowd, the Jazz are in fine position.

I really do feel like these next two Dallas games are probably the most important of the season. I think it's a guarantee Lauri sits, but will the Jazz be desperate enough to sit Keyonte?

Do you know what happens when you walk the tight rope sometimes?
