Sexton is not a good on-ball defender. I've never seen Sexton actually make anyone's life difficult on defense for an entire game, much less even a stretch of a game. He will pester someone with some initial pressing on a possession, but they typically figure him out in 3-5 seconds and burn him immediately.

Do you know how much effort and energy that would take with how much he spends on offense. That’s just a ridiculous and insane expectation.

I didn't state it as an expectation, just a matter of fact.

Thanks for the listen and the feedback. Only thing I really disagree with is I think Sexton has good trade value and if he doesn’t we better keep him anyways because he’s worth a lot more to us than giving him away for peanuts.

I agree with the second part unless it's salary/small value in a trade for a star. As far as the first part goes what do you think his value is around the league? I mean the Jazz don't seem to value him that high. The perception overall of him is kinda low and even you think he is really underrated by Jazz fans and front office.

Yesterday Justin Zanik called him a top 50 player on KSL… take it for whatever you’d like of course.

This is a good way to put it and why we are trying to push back on that is his efficiency and statistical profile looks a lot more like guards that are considered all stars. It’s a similar knock people used to use against like Book or Fox… once the cast improves around them the narrative changes.

I’m not looking to trade him so haven’t looked at what deals would have to look like.

The Lakers called on him and nothing ever gained traction there. I’m assuming they were offering a first in the future potentially or maybe some swaps? Not entirely sure but he’s worth at minimum more than that in my opinion.

There's just some contradictions in Sexton's game that make it hard for a team to really build around him and win. He's an undersized guard who isnt an intelligent defender. His defense is going to age horribly if he loses any of his athleticism. He's gotten better at using a pick to score and even can do a bit of playmaking now, but he isnt a PNR PG. He doesnt play as well with rim runners as he does with floor spacers, but he needs to play with a drop big on defense because a switching based scheme will expose him.

This is interesting and something I've been thinking about. If your lead guard needs a great rim protector to make up for their poor defense, then in general that rim protector is going to best be used as a screener on offense and so your lead guard needs to be able to play PNR.

I think that concept deals in some generalities, but I think it mostly makes sense.

And that's an amazing number (the 62.9). Pretty insane really.

For comparison trae young has played in the NBA for 6 seasons and is a 3 time all star. His best season TS% was 60.3. his career average is 58.1 (that's also his average this season)
Trae Young is a 3 time all star 100% due to his amazing offense.

Sexton for the entire season last year was at 61.6%.
This year he is at 61.5% for the season.

FWIW Steph Curry best true shooting % up to when he was 25 years old (sextons age) was 61.0

Of course he had some insane seasons after that of 66.9% and 67.5% and 6 more seasons above Sexton this year.

Fox has never hit 60% and is at 57.3% this year.

Yeah, and Sexton has gotten better in PNR as a facilitator. Him and Collins seems to have some chemistry. I haven't really seen that out of Walker tho

I think Fox is the level that Sexton can achieve. He might actually already be there....but there's a difference between doing it in 36 minutes and 25 minutes per game. If Sexton played 33+ minutes, kept his rate of production similar, and the Jazz have some success as a team I that would really spike his trade value. But he will probably always be seen as a guy who is a tougher fit unless he levels up his playmaking again.

This isn't a diss either. I think that if you put any of these boarderline all star guards on the market (Brunson, Fox, Trae, Garland, Murray etc) finding a good landing spot is easier said than done. So even if Sexton establishes himself among those guys, he's not going to be a fit for every team.
