It's not about doing favors. Ainge has a dilemma. He has to dump Bradley, Smart, or Crowder onto one of the few teams with cap space (or who can create it) so he doesn't take salary back. Bradley (UFA) and Smart (RFA) are tougher because it's hard to believe anybody will offer a first for a guy they have to pay handsomely after next season. Crowder has more value, but finding a 1st for him is still an uphill battle, especially when everyone knows that they're desperate to unload.
I'd say the chances are still better than 50/50 he finds a taker that isn't us, but the window is quickly closing. If he can't get that deal, then the S&T might be the lesser of evils from his bargaining position.
