What's new

Game Thread Jan 19, 2022 07:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Rockets

Added to Calendar: 01-19-22

Last night wasn't really a zone. Well kind of like a 1 man zone. It appeared the plan was to keep Rudy in the paint while the other 4 defenders would rotate on the perimeter to the open man. In theory this would eliminate the wide open cuts to the basket we see all the time when Rudy gets pulled out on a switch by a smaller player

Rudy did his job. The Rockets shot 35% at the rim which is abysmal. But it was glaringly obvious in the first period that The Jazz just didn't have the personnel to make it work.

None of them were good but Clarkson is just especially bad at every facet of team defense. And he was doubly exposed last night when The Jazz tried to do something new.

My guess is he's gone in a couple weeks.
Wait so last night wasn't a zone but we put one guy next to the basket and the perimeter guys rotated to whoever was open... well that is totally different from a zone where you have one guy next to the basket and the four perimeter guys rotate to the open player.

I'd also like to just remind people that Matthews had to take a two way deal from the Rockets because while he was an established good NBA player with the skill that is very coveted around the league... we wanted to hold on to pet projects like Miye Oni... who has yet to be picked up by anyone. If he was some obscure dude that no one knew about then whoops... but I literally mentioned him and I'm and NBA internetard. End of bench **** matters and we continue to have teams do laps around us.

“28 other teams missed on him, too.”
“He wouldn’t work here because [something, something] Quin [something, something] system needs specific guys [something something] Houston is a really terrible team where he’s in a vacuum [something something]” and then more something somethings.

I would love to have Matthews on our team, mostly so we never had to play against him. It's really frustrating for him to jump 10 feet in to a defender when he's shooting.

you forgot... "bruh... I'm sure you are smarter than those NBA gms... lolz"

Its hitting on those types of moves that allows you to not have a guy like JC taking up 12M in cap room and giving up first round picks to avoid the tax...

Oh yeah... you also forgot... "bruh we got Royce and Joe... we awesome at end of the bench stuff"

The difference between Royce/Joe and the other pet projects we can't let go of is you can see almost immediately when given some playing time that they were nba caliber players. You may not know to what extent they are players but you can tell. Some of our pets haven't been given a chance but some have been given enough of a chance to make a decision to churn their spot and find something else. Guys like Jon Koncar show you in a small sample they are nba players... its might surprise folks to see him do so well in Memphis... but not me.. it was clear he was effective in limited minutes/role. Miye, Bradley, Doke, Dante, NWG, and soon Forrest will be guys we held on to too long just because we drafted them.

I couldn't believe Quin didn't challenge that one. Its like with Harden though... its super effective because the threat of the foul means guys challenge your shot differently and you get more open.

Like I get the team isn't complete and everything, but this team is bad right now. Hopefully it's just a rough patch, but losing at home to the Rockets is an inexcusable type of loss. And it's not the only inexcusable type of loss they've had lately.

I mean, great if the Jazz picked him up, but he would just be buried in the bench as Quin has a stubborn refusal to play anyone on the bench.

You get one loss like we had to Detroit, LA or Houston... the combination of the three is bad. You also connect it to the collapses we have had against good teams and the lack of killer instinct... the team needs therapy.

Matthews would have been like Shaq and probably on the waiver wire by now if we had picked him up, You forget Quin is really, really smrt.

Probably... but maybe he gets the Forrest minutes and shows he's solid. The point is hitting on moves like that... throughout the years... means you can budget to use cap space on other things rather than pay a premium for what JC is doing. Quite frankly adding a budget 3 and D guy would make Royce movable... the overpay for backup centers has also hampered our flexibility in a bad way.

Its not that specific miss its those types of misses that can really hurt. You hold on to pet projects rather than churn those spots looking for Tate, Dort, Matthews, Koncar, GP2... and yeah you gonna have more Shaq Harrisons than Lu Dort's but you have to keep churning to find the good stuff.

Nah he'd still be on a two way and scoring 40 for the stars.
