In this case, the quality of the picks is actually higher than normal. Unprotected 27 and unprotected 31 from PHX are not too bad imo. Ironically, we traded high volume (3 picks for one) for a highly quality which is the opposite of what you’re implying here. The cost is high, but not because of the quantity.

Generally, picks are highly overvalued when you draft with them. But you also have to think about what you could trade them for. I question the trade more from the perspective of, “was this the best we could have done with that draft capital?”.

We’re still finding out how star contracts are going to be treated in the apron era. I wouldn’t say JJJ is a home run contract at all given his inconsistency. If he plays like he did last season, sure.

Mostly what I'm hearing is about his contract.

I actually think the picks we gave were pretty good compared to other trades you hear about.

I think the key thing most people have not picked up is that FO's are more in "headhunting mode" with the new CBA, and offensive production isnt as important when factoring value. Its more about supply and demand and most teams are targeting players they like, not just taking leaps of faith with whoever is available. Teams just cant go on spending sprees and they gotta be super careful as to who they tie their money into.

Desmond Bane, Mikal Bridges (both near 40M AAV guys) were sought after guys drawing premium prices while Trae Young gets gifted for free, Luka was sold at dollar store prices and no one wants to even call about Ja Morant (ok Ja hasnt really produced this year).

NIL really changes the math. If I was a guy going in the 20s but can get 1-2M to stick around college. I'd stay in school another year. The league is so talented now that these guys don't get as much leash. Getting paid an extra year or two in college before getting a regular rookie deal may be enough to set yourself up pretty well even if you end up not making it.

Yeah, and we already saw this last year with Philon and Yaxel. It's gone from guys projected to go in the second round as maybes to return to definitely going to return and guys projected in the 20's from probably not returning to probably returning.

There are also quite a few Freshman that I think will definitely be back next year who have shown flashes/came in as promising prospects: Harwell, Haralson, Khamenia, Anthony, McKinney off the top of my head. It's probably like this every year though and I have just paid closer attention to it.

You can see the shift based on how guys are trying to move heaven and earth to get back in college bb lol. Even if you stayed all 4 years and then got a couple years guaranteed on a 2rp type deal you are in a great position.

I'm still cool doing what we did as we have had a lot of prospects to process and really can't roster like 3 rookies if we are trying to be competitive. The only pick that stings is the Phoenix pick but perception is the value with those picks that far out... and you gotta give something to get something (unless you are dealing with Nico or dumars).

Agreed on the quantity argument. I have heard people mention that AD went for "2 first rounders" when one is this year's Thunder pick that will be #30 and then a 2030 top 20 protected warriors pick. That's not much better than 5 seconds that we saw Jae Crowder move for once.

But we gave up some highly quality picks. Which isn't your point, and I agree that discourse has gotten very lazy with parroting pick counts like they're all one for one.
