Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

So Ainge asked for 7. Knicks offered 5 worst possible picks.
Ainge said no.
Just trade Mitchell to the Knicks for 6 picks like I've been saying since January.

Have you missed all the talk about this not being about the number of picks?

I still have a hard time believing Ainge pulls the trigger on a deal for less than 3 unprotected firsts. I think he cares far more about getting unprotected picks than he does any of the potential players coming back.
I think so too... I just wonder if he got all three dudes (I think they all fit well with each other) maybe he relents on the unprotected picks. Maybe we do the 23/28 picks and then work in two swaps on 25/27 with the Minny picks. Maybe even 29 as well. Would allow them to move 24/26/30 next year around the draft.

I think Toppin and IQ are basically like 10 minute a night players if they stay on the Knicks and Don gets traded there. So I could see the Knicks saying eff it Grimes/IQ/Toppin plus the pick package with swaps and they get to keep a little dignity and pray that pick package is good enough to lure something in. The swaps give you the upside if they suck.

I'm kind of buying into Toppin and IQ having some hidden potential and Grimes is an obviously solid 3 and D option. Gives us some stuff to build something resembling a basketball team.

2 unprotected, 2 garbage picks, 2 pick swaps (make one a super blind swap) and call it good. I don't care about RJ, give me Grimes. If NYK doesn't want to deal then call up Orlando or Charlotte.
Ainge won't take a lesser deal for Mitchell than he got for Gobert nor does he really care for the players coming back I think. It's all about picks.

Y’all are going soft. 3 unprotected picks is the price just to get on the call.
Right. I think a fair deal is 3 unprotected picks and Obi, then a protected first for taking back Fournier's salary. That would be the dollar on the dollar deal. We should be able to get an equivalent deal to that at any time over the next year, and there is no reason for us to pull the trigger on that now. If the Knicks really want Don now, then they are going to have to beat that deal.

Now that the Knicks have offered 5 picks, I don’t believe there is a universe where a deal gets done for less than 5 total picks. I don’t know why anyone is talking about us taking back less picks than are being offered.

I appreciate the distinction between protected and unprotected picks, but does anyone see Ainge letting them dip below 5 total? I sure don’t, and I honestly think Ainge wants to set the pick record more than anything else.

I think a deal gets done if the Knicks unprotect (or very lightly protect) one more of their picks and add Grimes/Quickley, or if they unprotect or lightly protect one of their picks plus throw in another of the junk picks for a total of 6 picks.
