Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

TJ pretty active on Twitter today. Must mean nothing's imminent. I think he's almost always quite silent if something is afoot.

Unprotected picks have a way of coming back to haunt teams. Cleveland got the pick that became Kyrie by taking on a salary dump trade from the Clippers. Tatum and Brown obviously are good examples... this year NOP got the #8 and OKC got #12 from teams that were supposed to give away late picks. Danny also traded an unprotected pick for Kyrie Irving because of the mystery box element of the pick.

Picks are the currency and are just so useful in a rebuild in numerous ways. The unprotected picks are so much more valuable than the ones that might have restrictions. Those are the priority.

Where we are headed is obvious so you are quite late on the bad news part. I hope we get lucky like Danny did in Boston but proven talent means a lot more to me. Languishing for years in a rebuild when we had someone who wanted to be here and someone you could build around like Rudy makes no sense to me. I am all in on mixing it up and trading Donny because it wasnt working and it has been clear for several years that he doesn't want to be here. Why not just trade Donovan and get a haul with a few good pieces and see what we could create with a new coach and players who want to be here?
 
Grimes is interesting. It seems like he has some potential to develop into a Malcom Brogdon-like big guard in the right situation. Those types of players have value. But I don't think one prospect or one pick is going to make a difference to this trade happening one way or another.

I mean, I wont be surprised if he's not thrilled, but the poster made it seem like he was going to come here and sabotage the Jazz because they traded Mitchell?

That is a fair assessment because drafting in the NBA is the ultimate crap shoot. I am not convinced there weren't other options for us but certainly the blow up approach is what Ainge does. Moving Donny makes sense to me in any scenario because it has been clear for multiple years that he doesn't want to be here.
 
I'm guessing if NY did it they would want to do it on Monday and not lose it in the Friday afternoon news cycle. Maybe discussions over the weekend and announcement on Monday?
 
Mitchell is a star that has to be in a big market to capitalize on his brand. While he comes off as a nice professional dude, he just doesnt have a big personality. I think Adidas made a mistake in signing him tbh (though it's about to pay-off). They will be thrilled.
 
If the Jazz miss out on Wembanyama, Dereck Lively isn't a bad consolation price. He's a 7-foot rim-runner who can handle, pass and shoot out to 3pt range.
 
Just saw Woj on ESPN, he seems to think this is going to drag on for a while, said he think the Jazz and Knicks will re-visit their conversations in the coming weeks and the Jazz will hold conversations with other teams as well. Said time is on Utah's side and they are in no rush.

I think you read it wrong.

I think he was saying that IQ on the Knicks would have potential to sabotage the Knicks (in the same way that Pascall/Royce friendships presumably did with the Jazz's lockeroom).
