What's new

Jazz at Clippers, 12/28/2013 8:30PM

Jazz are so far away from being a playoff team... let a lone a contender. The best performances of the night came from Jefferson and Willams... two players who aren't in our future. Some on this board say that we are in a similar position as the Thunder were... The difference is that our young "stars" aren't playing really well. Please oh please get Jabari

The Thunder have 2 franchise players, Westbrook and Durant.

If the Thunder had merely "built" around role players like Ibaka (Favors) and sefolosha (Hayward) then they would be like us.

If the Jazz are to really copy the Thunder model then they must first obtain just one franchise player. Just one would be a good start. Perhaps Wiggins, Parker, or Randle will be our Durant?

In this bizarre season of "Bad Wins" (they hurt our draft position) and "Good Losses," I've put together a "Tanking Ranking System" for evaluating each game as to whether we Jazz fans should feel good about it. Based on this system, we can decide if the team moved forward with our stated strategy of Discovery, Development and Defense. It's a 10-point system, with 8-10 points representing an excellent outcome, 5-7 representing an acceptable result, and 0-4 representing "negative tanking." There are 12 performance benchmarks, and I'll use the Clippers game for the evaluation.
1) +2 if Jazz hold a team under 100 (+2 -- Clippers scored 98)
2) + 2 if Jazz score +100points -- (0, Jazz scored 90)
3) -2 if Jazz win (no deduction -- (Jazz lost 98-90)
4) +1 if Burks plays 30 minutes 0 (He played 23)
5) +1 if Favors plays 30 minutes 0 (22 because of foul trouble)
6) +1 if Burke plays 30 minutes 1 (38)
7) +1 if Kanter plays 30 minutes 1 (31)
8) -1 if Jefferson/Williams play a combined 30+ (-1, 59)
9) -1 if Lucas plays 5+ minutes (-1, 11)
10) +1 if Jazz have 23+ assists (+1, 24)
11) -1 if Jazz have 16+ turnovers (-1, 19)
12) If Jazz lose by less than 10 points (+1, 8)

Grading scale:
9-10 A
7-8 B
5-6 C
3-4 D
0-2 F

Clippers game grade: 5 points/C-

It will be easy for Lindsey to determine Coach Corbin's grade with this system. I'll post this evaluation in the game thread after each game.

I really enjoyed this.

Jazz fought hard and lost a close one to a potential NBA finalist contender without Burke or Hayward or Favors playing particularly well. I think you have to consider this loss a moral victory. The other thing I like about this young team is that they seem to play pretty well on the road.

The most glaring thing that bothered me was our team defense. A lot of times Burke was getting picked off and Kanter would slide over but no one would cover for Kanter. Other times Burke's play ole' defense. Favors lets his fouls get in his head and then he plays horrible on both ends. Another big problem is consistency, which isn't a shock considering how young this team is. Jazz definitely need to hit two home runs in this draft. They need a superstar and a very good player with their GS pick.

I agree. However, as crazy as this may sound, for the most part, I actually thought Kanter did a good job guarding Blake Griffin in the post last night. Griffin made a lot of absurd looking shots and got to the free throw line a lot.
