Justin Zanick on Keyonte: "Maybe the most diversified offensive skillset in the draft"
Glad you're coming around…JZ: "Keyonte has all the shots, some shots people can never develop"
He played out of position in college and was still able to find new skills while being accommodating to the Team's established guards. I'm not sure you have any knowledge of George at all.Truthfully I'm really not all that high on Keyonte, mostly because I don't like drafting a dude with the idea of turning him into something he doesn't seem to be (a PG) - I just prefer good-faith arguments over pretending that a player's scoring efficiency is locked in from his freshman year of college.
not saying or pretending i'm on zanik's level, but i did watch a crap ton of baylor games specifically to watch keyonte and these were a couple of my observations:Justin Zanick on Keyonte: "Maybe the most diversified offensive skillset in the draft"
from Feb 16 in the 2023 draft megathread: highest ceilings, imo, are miller, whitmore, walker and george.
Jan 18: same thread: george might become very underrated in this draft, imo (which could be very good for utah). the first few times i saw him, i thought damn, he's a ridiculously advanced offensive player - shooting, scoring, passing. (then went on to question the efficiency)
Bottom line, i watched him a lot and despite the struggles with efficiency, i'm with Zanik 100% on his offensive skillset.Jan: 12: yeah, i think he's probably 6'3-6'4" or so. and not a great vertical athlete. professional scorer though with good passing chops. poor man's kyrie? just a really advanced offensive player for his age. not really sure what to think of him as an overall prospect.
cy, where were you seeing or hearing this?JZ: "Keyonte has all the shots, some shots people can never develop"
I posted the video in the Zanik Press Conference Threadcy, where were you seeing or hearing this?
Dude I know almost nothing. I just see that it's a concern that a lot of scouts have had on him, but I'm sure you have more knowledge of George than they do.He played out of position in college and was still able to find new skills while being accommodating to the Team's established guards. I'm not sure you have any knowledge of George at all.
Thanks for that. Good to see he’s very engaged on the defensive end too.Realized I already watched a half of the ARK game, so here is Gonzaga vs Baylor
Summary
- Crazy shot taker. The degree of difficulty on his shots is insane. Sometimes ill advised but also sometimes necessary and he makes some of them
- Very left hand dominant off the dribble
- Very good intensity on defense. Highly engaged. Do not confuse him with a chucker that does not care, he is competing every play.
- Bad conditioning? Expends a ton of energy on both ends, but looked winded and had to be subbed early and often
- Mostly positive passing
- Explosive and physical finishing style when attacking the basket
- Runs directly into screens, not good
1H
- First play PnP action, zags trap and he makes the pass quickly. Miss.
- Stawther is his defender and clearly instructed to face guard him off the ball.
- High PnR action, zags trap again. They don't want to give him any space. As the play develops, beats Strawther off the dribble. Help man comes and tries to take a charge....no call and George hits the awkward shot, but maybe should have dumped it off?
- Already yelling at his teammate who blew a switch
- Off the screen 3 from the wing, Watson is in his face but shoots it anyways and misses
- Chases around some (bad) screens set for Stawther well
- Late clock situation, rejects the screen and blows by Stawther. Timme waiting rotates over and George misses the layup after contact. Nice move, but missed.
- Makes a good read in transition for the assist
- Goes for a really weird gamble and steal, don't like that. But makes a good help rotation later on in the possession. Gets the rebound and pushes ahead for another nice transition assist.
- Gets through an on ball screen Royce style aka running through it.
- Goes for a difficult pass to the big, overthrows it for a turnover
- Keeps running directly into screens, but he looks a little upset at his teammates for not communicating
- Pull up off the dribble three in transition, swish. Right in the defenders face.
- Triple threat on the wing, screener comes up and zags double. Makes the pass to the slipping big which forces zags to foul.
- BLOB, takes a movement three off a screen. Misses. He's definitely going to bait out 3 point fouls in the NBA. Kicks his legs out and defenders undercut him a lot.
- Has a semi open deep three opportunity, decides to pump fake and attack closeout instead. Good defense forces the step back miss from 3.
- Does not want to dribble right, always goes left and defender almost makes him pay for it. But he ends up hitting a DEEP three in his face.
- Intense on ball defense on Strawther, gets in his face and Strawther doesn't challenge him. Good help defense later on in the possession too.
- Looks winded?
- Very alert on defense, constantly checking his blindspots
- Semi transtion, hits defender with DWade windmill crossover for the AND1 SHEESH!
- Really good at digging down on drives.
- Next play intercepts post entry pass for steal
- High PnR, goes left of course, beats the big who shows but poor spacing and gets it stripped
- Really good closeout defense by zag defender on perimeter, but he shoots it in his face and makes it again???
- Another high PnR, wants to go left badly but shut off....finds a way to go left anyways and beats his man. Help big comes over and he makes the right read for the dump off. His teammate got fouled but no call.
