We won't go into the luxury this year adding a bad like Parsons because nobody is going to overspend on Favors or Exum. We might pay the luxury to keep Rubio in 2019/20, but that would be one season. We can afford that.

We aren't getting a superstar in 2019. I don't think PG is going to sign a one year deal in OKC then just up and decide to come to us next summer. So go get a draft pick that could be used to trade for a big name should they become disgruntled.

To eat Parsons' deal, we'd have to renounce Favors, Exum, Neto, and the Ungs, wouldn't we?
 
Cleveland extends the Qualifying Offer to Rodney Hood.
Phoenix does not extend QO's to Elfrid Payton or Alex Len.

Not really. If we renounced Favors ($18 million cap hold) and signed Exum during the Moratorium (let's say $8), we could trade Thabo ($5.5 expiring), Burks ($11.5 expiring) and maybe Jerekbo ($4.2 expiring) for Parsons ($24) and Jaren Jackson Jr ($4.5).

The numbers aren't exactly known at this point because we don't know the exact cap numbers. Until the cap numbers come out, we don't know how much Jaren Jackson's contract/hold would be. But if we renounce Favors and sign Exum early, we would have a few million of cap space. Since Parsons and Jackson combine for around $29, we would use a combination of space and expirings and future assets to work the deal.

For the same reason you shouldn't be bullish in 2019 (WAY more money to go around), it's a losing game trying to beat Boston's asset collection. Seriously, look at everything they have if a true superstar were to come available. They could get Kawhi in a snap of a finger if he would commit to a deal. Davis unhappy? Boston's got him.

I'm not saying we shouldn't collect assets, but I personally think being a legit playoff squad with max cap space is our most valuable asset this Summer and next.

Salary dumps are great if we are rebuilding or on the fringe. Right now we need real tangible players that can contribute. Being a team of our caliber with space could allow us to not only get a max star player potentially, but also get some serious contributors for cheap (which by the way, are just as valuable as first round picks to many teams)

I understand where you are coming from, but I would rather have the asset in my pocket than the asset I hope to have. Cap space this summer only has value to us if we are absorbing a salary.

As for 2019, what is the target? http://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/2019/rfa/ There aren't 5 names on this list who are worth a big contract AND make sense for us AND would even consider us.

Also consider that most of the NBA teams will have big space in 2019, I simply refuse to believe that 2019 space for us is all that valuable.

How can you say we are overreacting and not to panic and then list these as our options?

We’re trying to compete for a championship. This is not good enough.
