A huge fall from grace. Last year we were all talking about an extension at $15M per was a great deal. I bet he’d kill for that now.

So barring a trade, the Jazz's roster is pretty much set minus end of bench players. It's nothing flashy like a lot of us wanted, but this offseason didn't really need to be. There's no reason you can't run back a team that went 30-6 to close the regular season, beat a "super team" in the first round, and gave the best regular season team a fight in the 2nd round and just call it good. All this after last season saw us lose an all-star the Jazz manufactured and left us for an identity. They recovered nicely from the first half of the season and, assuming we're healthy, will be a dangerous team next year.

The only contract I question is Exum and only because there don't appear to be any options on it. But he's young enough to pan out if he stays healthy. Utah is adept at player development (have I mentioned how much I love we can do this now? Suck it Corbin.) and it's hard to practice when your having to rest up. Otherwise, I'm okay with some overpays, like with Favors, because of the options which gives them a chance to play into the contract. Play well, get paid. If not, well, ciao. And if Al friggin' Horford can develop a 3, so can Favors.

This was also a good demonstration to fans and players that Utah can retain their own talent, which I think is kind of underrated. As much as our roster has hemorrhaged over the last few years, we needed to settle down the situation some. One think I liked was learning Quin reached out to Derrick after Derrick felt unsettled. It reminds me somewhat of Pops reaching out to LMA and Duncan and getting stuff hashed out. Folks like to feel valued, know where an organization is going and how they fit. I give Quin and DL a ton of credit for doing just that.

So in any case, I will call this an overall success for Utah in terms of what they wanted to do. Some teams got worse, some got better. But as long as we see improvements where needed, Utah is in a golden position right now with their core. They have massive flexibility and an idea of where to go and how to get there. Bravo, Dennis. Bravo.

I think this season more than any other we need to see what this team can do when healthy after having a year to play together. So many years we heard that from the Jazz and it always sounded like a cop-out. They wanted to see what we could do "organically" when we all already knew what we had in Hayward, Jefferson, Millsap, Boozer, DWill, etc. and that we still needed to add something, but they always pushed this "organic growth" crap on us. But finally we have that team that truly has a chance to show that organic growth.

We added a shooter (hopefully) in Allen, as well as another play-maker. That is really what we were lacking in the playoffs was another source of offense. If Allen can even give us that a little bit, coupled with even better team cohesion, then how are we not going to be even better than how we ended the season, and we ended it on pace to win 64 games in a full season? With definite leaps expected from Mitchell, Royce and even Favors as he gets more comfortable after all the time he missed with injury I think we do nothing but improve next year as we stand. I think 58 wins is in reach, if not more.

Yeah I hoped they would go after a more solid star player, or at least shore up our shooting or add another volume scorer or something, but we cannot be too disappointed knowing that we are going to see an energized team lead by possibly our best player, and certainly most dynamic player, since Stockton and Malone walked the floors of the Delta Center, in Mitchell, and a supporting cast that is more united than really any team we have had before, where we always had at least one or two malcontents. This team is united, plays unselfishly as a team, has an all-star caliber young player and solid role players, and doesn't have a bad locker-room guy in the bunch, and they have had a year to gel and learn who each other is and how each other plays. Man we are in for a fun season next year. October cannot come soon enough!

I feel bad for Hood. He showed a lot of promise and it turns out he just mentally cannot handle the pressure of the pro game. Sad really. I hope he finds a place he can flourish and enjoy the game again, as it is kind of obvious he has lost that sense of joy in basketball. I really liked him and thought he could be a great player, probably still can, if he can get his head straight. Good luck Rodney.

Isn't it odd how a single act can destroy a career. I bet Hood wishes he could have a do-over for that moment he refused to go into a game during garbage time.
 
I'd bring Rodney Hood back on a 1 year minimum salary prove it deal. Win-win for both sides and less pressure for him cause he clearly won't be a starter or be expected to carry the team the way Mitchell has proven he can.
