Jazz have the assets to have a big summer

As everyone knows, there is probably going to be an unprecedented amount of movement in the league this summer. Aside from FAs Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Gay, Joe Johnson, Boozer, Amare, Yao and Dirk, there are several impact players that are likely going to move--like Gilbert Arenas, probably Hedo Turkoglu, etc.--plus others as collateral damage in the shuffle.

Although the Jazz don't have cap space, they have a number of assets that could make them real players in trades this summer. Including the player the Jazz draft with the lotto pick, the Jazz could bring in 3 - 4 new players who could make an impact in the next 1-2 years. How the Jazz handle this summer will go a long way to determine whether they can really become contenders, or if they'll end up like the Sacramento Kings of the last decade.

Here's what we've got to work with:

AK's expiring - which I'm sure several teams looking to dump long-term salary would consider, or that could possibly be used in a sign & trade to bring in a FA. Examples: Washington would be happy to send Gilbert Arenas, and Philly would love to send over Brand, Toronto might be happy to send Turkoglu, etc. ...not that we'd want these types of bad contracts. However, if the Jazz really wanted Rudy Gay, they might offer AK in a sign and trade. Other teams looking to cut longer term salary might do a straight trade.

Boozer in a sign & trade - meaning the Jazz would hopefully get back something of some substance in a sign-and-trade, at least a back-up for Millsap. A player like Michael Beasley, Udonis Haslem, Brandon Bass, etc. would make the Jazz's rotation and relieve a log jam for the team adding Boozer.

Ante Tomic - is an asset who would probably be a top 20 pick in this year's draft. He could factor into trades if the Jazz aren't willing to wait on him.

The Memphis pick - basically a throw-in, but a sweetner in a trade. There's another thread on this...

The trade exception from the Eric Maynor trade - I'm not sure how much it's worth, and probably the Jazz want to hold on to it to save money, but it could factor into a trade that nets another draft pick this year if the Jazz want another pick in this draft.

As always, look for teams that are going into rebuilding mode, but have solid players that don't fit into the long-term plans. This is always the scenario that leads to trades involving players like Pau Gasol, J. Richardson, Richard Jefferson, Jeff Hornacek, etc. One of these types of opportunities might be out there. Any veteran on the Timberwolves, Pistons, Kings, or Warriors could be in play.

A contending team needs two real all-stars and two other high-impact players. So far the Jazz have Williams in the All-Star category and Millsap, Miles and Matthews as potential impact players. If AK and Boozer are close-but-not-enough, see if an upgrade can be made to net an impact wing or big through a trade, and get another in the draft.

I feel that we have a tremendous opportunity to make moves, but I'm just having a difficult time seeing us really making any more this offseason. We generally have are passive rather than active regarding decisions, i.e. the last two seasons the only thing we've done is decide to match. In '06 KOC stated that Matt Harpring was the biggest priority of the off-season. After he was signed, he publically stated that "Jarron Collins is now the biggest priority of the off-season". We really don't have any confidence in being able to land good players, whether by trade or free agency. I think it's doubtful we try to sign-and-trade Boozer. I also find it more unlikely we move Kirilenko rather than just let him expire, especially considering the plethora of options we've had regarding him in the past that we haven't acted on.

I honestly see us bringing back the same team and selling it as internal improvement with how young we are, how we have an exciting new rookie, how we're finally going to be healthy, and how Millsap will do better in a starting role. Unless there's a passive decision to be made this summer, don't expect any active ones.

'08 get knocked off by L.A. in the second round 2-4 ... brought back the same team.
'09 knocked off by L.A. in the first round 1-4 ... brought back the same team.
'10 swept by L.A. in the second round ... likely to bring back the same team.

Your post sounds good, I wish it were true, I want it happen--but really? The Jazz had big assets to make a splash last summer, and last year at the trade deadline. Instead we got cash for Ronnie Brewer and a Matt Harpring Salary Dump.

If you look at the Jazz history, it is far more likely that the Jazz will wait until another team offers Mathews way too much money and then match it, and add an undrafted rookie. Thats it, end of summer.

Steve Luhm just posted this to the SL Trib's Jazz blog:

https://blogs.sltrib.com/jazz/index.php?p=16791&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

In the blog entry he talks about the Jazz summer plans and then goes on to talk about an article on Hoopshype.com:

One item from Hoopshype.com over the weekend is worth noting.

The web site reported that, according to HoopsMarket.com, a basketball-related blog that I never previously visited, Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis attended a recent game in Europe between Caja Laboral and Real Madrid.

According to HoopsMarket.com, a Spanish newspaper claimed Rambis paid "special attention" to Ante Tomic, a 23-year-old Croatain center who the Jazz drafted in 2008.

If true, the potential impact on the Jazz is clear.

Why would Rambis be checking on Tomic unless the Jazz were open to trading his rights. And what makes more sense than Utah trying to use Tomic and move up in the draft?

Minnesota owns the No. 4 pick, where it will likely have a choice of players like Syracuse's Johnson, Kentucky's Cousins or somebody like Kansas' Cole Aldrich.

If none of them excite the Timberwolves, perhaps they would be willing to trade the pick to Utah for the rights to Tomic and the No. 9 selection.

I'll tell you one thing: the brief item on Hooshype motivated several readers to send emails and ask what I know about the Jazz's plans for Tomic?

My answer: I don't know. But if Utah could move into the top four of a draft that many regard as five-deep in clear-cut NBA prospects, the Jazz would have to be willing to use Tomic as part of the bait, wouldn't they?

I don't really consider HoopsHype that credible of a source, and the comment by Rambis could have been a completely benign one, as he may have no idea who, if anyone, owns the rights to Tomic, but the prospect of moving up to the 4th spot is intriguing.

Tomic and a swap of 4 and 9 is a dream scenario. I can't possibly see it being that cheap. Maybe the Brewer pick tossed in, but I hope KOC is looking into this.

Jazz love Kevin Love. The rambis and Love feud was well documented last season.

How about #9 and Tomic for Love & #17 ? Maybe the Jazz pick up Xavier Henery or Gordon Hayward?

....there is only going to be ONE more year of the NBA as we now know it! Then there will be a prolonged strike that will change the face of the sport forever! In fact, guaranteed contracts may become a thing of the past! Certainly no contracts longer than 3 years. Salaries will be cut at least in half, probably more. Whatever the Jazz hope to do they better do it this year, cause there ain't gonna be a next year!

I love Love, too. Huge upgrade to actually have someone who plays with balls at the 4.

Love can pass, love can hit a jumper from the high pick and roll and Love is a RFA the year after the lockout.

My only concern with Love was his IQ. He complained that the triangle was too difficult to learn. For a team like the Jazz that runs a structured offense, that doesn't sound good. But who knows, maybe he thought Rambis was a tool, his team sucked, and he cashed out.

*edit - I would do the above trades in a heart beat BTW.

The latter being more likely and not because we can't move him -- because we won't.

If the Jazz wanted to move AK, they would have a great opportunity at the deadline. His contract will have been mostly paid by that point. The issue would come down to whatever financial savings a trade partner could offer and how much the Jazz felt they needed it. But presuming AK is healthy (Big If), he would be highly attractive to playoff teams. Personally, I hope they don't and find a way to sign him at a reasonable offer after the year. AK has several good years left in him (as long as he isn't overpaid.)

I would be willing to trade Tomic for #17 in this draft and pick up Paul George, Xavier Henry, or whomever slips. I think the trade you have listed is pretty fair though. The reason the Jazz lost to the Timberwolves a few times is largely because of Kevin Love's rebounding and inside play. The Jazz have a tendency to like trading for players that hurt them.
