Jazz Officially Matched Hayward According to Woj

For me this story that good players dislike to move to SLC is a an urban legend.

Cleveland is a small market and an ugly city too but it attract good players.

This might be true if we were good... We aren't a contender or a great destination which means we have to overpay to get players in if we can even get them to consider us.

Can't understand Hayward's contract.
Right now there is only a handful of players that got bigger contracts than Hayward.
Bosh, LeBron, and who else.

That isn't how contracts work. Max contracts are based on a percentage of the salary cap. The salary cap has gone up a lot recently. If they got rid of the 'max' contract limits then Lebron would be getting $40 mil a year or so.

People are being presumptuous that he would even go to Utah. Why are so many Jazz fans unable to see that quality FA's don't want to play there. Especially not when the team is that far removed from playoff caliber.

YOu have a point about us not being a playoff team yet but Utah is a pretty stable franchise and we have a lot of young talent. This idea that no one wants to come to Utah because Utah sucks is so 1980s. There are many different reasons why guys go where they go. Lebron just left Miami for Cleveland. Who would do that? LA can't get anyone to go there. I still think there is sunny weather there.

Players can play in summer league without a contract - they'd just get insurance first. Wiggins remains unsigned, but played last night.

Obviously the Jazz don't plan on using that cap space anymore for salary dumps. I have enough trust in Lindsey et al. to trust that they done their due diligence in regards to potential use of the cap space. Nor do I really think it's a huge benefit to Charlotte by matching a day early. It's Charlotte. Who are they going to sign today that they couldn't sign tomorrow?

I heard randle didnt play because of a health issue

I agree!
Ariza better defensively, fg% 3pt%, rebounds, 8m

Even if we had to pay 10m-12m but nobody knows for sure if we would have to pay more. Lot of people around hear assume things to accommodate for the Jazz mistakes. I agree that a lot of free agents prefer to go to winning teams and to big markets, but there is also a large group of players that don't like all the attention they get and would prefer a smaller city. You never know unless you try.....

Ariza was better for 1 year! Haywards career stats are better than Ariza's. Heck, Haywards Career stats are probably close to as good as the 4 best years Ariza has had. Hayward is 23. When Ariza was 23, he averaged probably around 6 points a game and shot less than 30 percent from 3's. Ariza played well last year, but the 2 years before that, he was outplayed. He also had John Wall taking attention away from him and was able to be a complimentary player. Hayward had defenses focused on him and struggled a bit (as Ariza would too) but was still able to score almost 17 ppg. Hayward is a better player. And Ariza wasn't coming to Utah anyway. He was likely looking for a good deal with a contender first, then a great deal with a non contender. He got a good deal with Houston and will probably do pretty well, because teams will be focusing on Harden and Howard.

Yup. Embarrassing to read some of this "Hayward dunno how to play basketball!!" stuff just because we had to overpay for him.

Ariza is way way closer to Marvin Williams than he is Hayward, and I will bet anything we just saw a better season from Ariza than he will have in the rest of his career.

I hope the people saying this will not hurt us in the future are correct. I just can't see this as a good move. But I really hope I'm wrong and that Hayward shows to be worth more than a lot of us think or that the salary cap goes up enough to make it bearable.
.
Either way I think this is the 1st move I really disagree with since DL took over as GM.

They're mostly the same people who said that ak47 was worth the max.

You can't fix stupid.

Good comparison. Ariza is like a MW. He'll give you some nice games, but never great. Have a hard time believing after 10 years, he's finally a 46%/41% shooter, when the 9 years before says otherwise. He's also 29, so a decline is likely coming. AS much as I HATE what Hayward is getting, I'd say there's a bigger likelihood of Hayward approaching the value of his contract for 4 years than there is of Ariza being worth $32M.

On a per year basis:
James, Bosh, Kobe, Amare, Joe Johnson, Howard, Irving, Wall, Cousins, Paul, Durant, Deron, Gay, Rose, Griffin, Boozer, Randolph, M. Gasol, George, Love, Westbrook, B. Lopez, Aldridge, Lee.

His deal will start at about the same as Asik, Lin, Hibbert and E. Gordon are making this season.

And remember, salaries "leapfrog" so some players may sign deals next season which will move them ahead of Gordon. From his draft class, Wall and George were both extended for a lot more money. Cousins will make about 3 million more.

The folks saying Ariza is better are just grass-is-greener people. Really hope Hayward has a better year and quiets some of the hate. I don't love the contract either but there just isn't much out there that fills our needs and there is a ton of money on the market. With the amount of buyers there are out there for him we will be able to move him for other assets if need be.

Everyone keeps forgetting about Burks and Kanter, if they break out then their contracts would cause problems if Exum is a star. I guess if anything Hayward would just be gone anyway.

Do you guys even realize what you are saying? If Burks and Kanter break out and Exum is a star, we will have a dynamite team on our hands. Other teams will be dying to take any of them off our hands and we will be in a position where we can make trades based on needs to take the team further. How the **** can three of our players turning out to be great be a problem?
