Jazz Offseason Plan

Ntilikina is a lock down perimeter defender. Sure his offense is bad, but he's been in NY for his 4 pro years where the only thing consistent has been inconsistency.

I think Rudy and Don could mold him like they have Royce. Royce could barely dribble starting out.
I wouldn't mind him as a minimum flier guy, but he likely has an opportunity to take a minimum somewhere they can actually play him a little. If he runs out of options then go ahead. I'd give him Miye's spot in the rotation.

I think Frank needs to get over being a pg if he wants to be successful and just be a 3-D wing who can dribble a little or attack a close out here and there. I agree NY is not the place for a development guy the last few years. He should be looking for a situation like Houston, OKC, Orlando where he can get some burn and explore the space a bit.

I agree with this 100%. I think he if cares about his development and ability to make it long term in this league, he should come to Utah on a minimum deal to be surrounded by people who support him.

And yes, no need to try to make him a PG. Just let him be a defensive specialist and hopefully develop a 35% 3pt shot.

It says a lot that the year they got good he got his minutes cut drastically while playing for a defensive minded coach.

Good point.

Also a lot of guards trying to get playing time in that backcourt for a coach who isn't known for development. Rose, Burks, Quickley, Payton, RJ Barrett, Rivers for 21 games. That's 6 or 7 guys playing the PG or SG position before you even consider Ntilikina.

For us, we have Don, Conley, JC and who else going for SG or PG minutes plus Ingles who kind of plays like a PG in certain lineups. We hoped Shaq would be that guy, but he just didn't mesh. I think Frank could.

It's buy low idea. We really don't have much to lose.

Ntlikina is another Oni type. He has all the physical tools, his shot looks good enough, you watch his good plays and it seems like he has talent, but at the end of the day he just can't put anything together on the court. I'm not against signing him, but I dont really care either. Players like him are a dime a dozen.

You guys know the statistical breakdowns better than me, and I found this article interesting as the NY media debated NY playing Frank against Trae Young.

When considering overall defensive capabilities, Ntilikina stands out among the bunch. Since draft day, the 6’4″ guard has been considered a great defender. His 7’1″ wingspan adds to his ability to disrupt passing lanes.

But considering defensive box plus-minus and defensive win shares, Ntilikina, again, sticks out. In terms of the former, Ntilikina has a 2.2 defensive box plus-minus, which is higher than Rose (0.5), Payton (-0.6) and Immanuel Quickley (-0.9).
...
So, in terms of defense, Ntilikina is the best option, especially in a series in which slowing down Young should be the defensive priority. If Ntilikina is doing this, the Knicks should easily win the series.

Give Ntilikina a shot, the numbers prove he deserves it.

We all know now that Frank did not play against Atlanta, and Trae torched NY eliminating them from the playoffs.

I prefer Frank to Oni. I think he's proven that he's actually a good defender and can do that at a high level. Whenever I saw Oni play I thought his defense was overrated. He takes really bad angles and doesn't have the greatest technique. Oni is way too reliant on his physical ability.

Remember when Mudiay came to Utah for the EXACT same reasons? How’d that work for his NBA career? We’re also the same organization that has failed to develop or even give a chance to guys like Brantley and to an extent, Oni. A few years ago our player development reputation was all the rage. Now, not so much.

I don't think Brantley or Oni or even Mudiay have an elite NBA skill. We went after Thomas because we thought he was an elite NBA shooter.

With Ntilikina, we are definitely getting an elite NBA perimeter defender. He has that elite NBA skill. We have the need for players with that skill.

And there are more things at play for Ntilikina. Even though Mudiay did have a pretty good year with us, Frank would have more connections within the team. Just like getting Favors last year was lauded for his on and off the court contributions, I think a Frank deal could be too.

Shaq has elite NBA perimeter defense too, one that is even better than Frank. But he's simply too unskilled offensively to have a role in Quin's system.

We just need to find out if that combination machine has been developed yet and I'm on board for a Shaq/Thomas combo.

There goes my dream of signing Batum with the taxpayer MLE. Also surprised to see Hollinger expects Niang to get paid so much.

Again… I think we are hoping for Gay, Batum, maybe Jamychal Green if he opts out and wants more years but I think it’s unlikely. If you miss then it’s Craig, Harkless, Ariza.

I also think Portland would do Jones Jr for Favs. They need a vet there that can cover when Nurkic goes out. They have salary issues. I think it would be a slight help in making Dame a little happy without major risk. It depends on their other plans.

They are just his analytics numbers. Lots of guys will get less or more. Batum is still possible. Most the teams that have MLE available are not title contenders… I doubt anyone gives him full MLE for more than 2 years… I think he gets 3/18 but has to decide if he wants it here, LA, GS, Brooklyn, etc.

Gay is the guy I think we should really focus on because Batum has less of a chance of happening. Sign Gay at taxpayer MLE and get a minimum guy like Galloway and I think we are ahead of the game. See what Favs can get us but don’t force a deal. Ryan will likely need to have a capital call but please just do it.

Yeah he's got RHJ as 2.9M and last year he got a non-guaranteed camp deal, was waived, unemployed for a while, then finally got a 2-way, I believe. I'm also a little confused why Aminu is on the list.

Also, would we really be as high on Batum if we didn't play against him? Not saying he wouldn't be a good pick up, but part of him looking so great against us was Quin refusing to adjust and ceding all those open looks for Batum. Opposing coaches may not be so rigid.

I really wish we had the full MLE instead of just the taxpayer MLE. Gay would definitely be a good pick up if Batum is out of our range, even he may end up getting a bigger offer from someone else.
