Jazz Offseason Plan

I listened to this. Didn't have much to add other than with regard to Matt Thomas he said "now that DL is gone Matt Thomas may not be back". Either the remaining front office folks are pining all the bad stuff on DL or this may have been another DL going rogue deal.
But also, wouldn’t it just make sense since he is responsible for everything, ultimately? Best case scenario, he simply signs off on all of that hot garbage because he’s lazy. Worst case scenario, he actually put in the work to go unilateral on his staff. Considering that he was just basically shown the door, I think that’s as good evidence as we’re gonna find that it’s more the latter than the former (which gives Quin some vindication for the rigidity of his rotations as well, unfortunately).

My impression is it's just his opinion.
Probably.

If Conley bails, we got to re-evaluate everything. Bojan is on the way down. Clarkson is limited. So much riding on Don and Rudy. Hard to imagine we stay a home seed or advance out of the second round next year.

By the logic Tony Jones was using, if we can't take that next step due to Conley bailing,, why wait to "break up the core" when so much of the core (Bojan and Rudy) could get injured or sharply decline in the next year?

Andy Larsen on Checketts show said he thinks there's less than a 50% chance that Conley re-signs with the Jazz.
If this ends up being the case you have to just make massive changes now, and set yourself up to a point you can be great in about 3 years.

Which is best case scenario at this point. Conley re-signing is what is best for the team. We are going to be worse if he doesn’t re-sign. Use the MLE to go get a wing who can defend and we are right back in the mix for contention.
This. And I’ll add one other component to it: Whether Utah stays put at 30, or finds a way to move up a little in the draft, they need to work extremely aggressively to identify a wing 3 and D that Quin will agree to give PT to on day 1.

It’s not sexy, but if the Jazz ran it back with Conley minus Niang, added a wing 3 and D wing with the MLE and a 3 and D perimeter player via the draft- especially if the kid can play PG mins while we load manage Conley for the playoffs, this is the easiest way for the Jazz to ensure that they can make a better run at the finals than what we saw this year.

I listened… it sounded like he had no insider knowledge… just that there are lots of other options for him so one option isn’t the overwhelming favorite. He mentioned Dallas/NY and also taking the MLE from the Lakers… which I guess could happen but they’d need to clear Harrell or Kuzma to avoid the apron. I’m sure they’d like to do a Kuzma for Conley sign and trade… I haven’t decided whether that is better than nothing or if I’d rather do nothing.

What about getting picks and re-routing Kuzma tho

Also, do the Jazz have to receive salary (/Lakers have to send salary) in that deal?

Jazz do not have to receive any but Lakers do have to send equal amount out as Conley’s salary.

Maybe we could take KCP/picks back instead.

Just listened to Tony Jones on the Bill Riley show. Sounds like Niang is really the only rotation guy that he doesn't expect to be back next season. Say's the Jazz feel like they are really close and don't need to make major changes, instead they just need to do some tweaking and refining to the roster. As far as the back end of the roster, Niang and Ilyasova not expected to be back and Matt Thomas could be gone as well, Morgan's chances of coming back are 50/50 at this point. Oni and Hughes both expected to be back, he didn't really mention Brantley, Forrest or Dok.
I comprehend what Tony is saying, but it makes zero ****ing sense to fully run it back. You can’t make your playoff lineup matchup proof by making zero ****ing changes to the playoff roster (i.e., running back the same nine player core but swapping out Niang for Batum or someone). You can’t just add some dudes for the minimum and second round rookies/undrafted free agents that Quin will never play to make your team “matchup proof.”

We’re not going to attract anyone worthwhile in FA because we have no money, but more importantly, no real PT to offer. Yeah tons of attractive minimum options want to move to SLC to ride the pine.

We need to rework our starters and primary rotation to become matchup proof. You know, with guys that actually play.

It’s going to be a full rebuild next year if that’s the plan.

Also, WTF? We finally develop Niang into an NBA rotation player and we just let him leave for nothing? What the hell? Why are we spending time developing these guys just to let them walk when one actually develops?

I say keep Niang’s cheap 3 pt shooting and move Bogey.
