I would be upset if I was Hayward too. He put in a lot of time with the team that took away from other things he could have been doing. Once games roll around, everyone should at least get a chance to prove themselves. He didn't get a fair shake.

The biggest thing that bothers me is the whole Rudy Gay thing. If they really thought Rudy was a better fit for the national team why wasn't he invited originally over Hayward??? To me that is a sign that Hayward literally had a 0% chance of making the final cut. If injuries/withdraws don't improve your chances of making the team it means he wasn't considered a finalist from the beginning.

Also, Rudy Gay and Demarcus Cousins are both representing our country???!!!!!!! Is Coach K insane?

Is it possible Hayward was invited and Rudy initially wasn't based on rep but that once they were both there playing, it was clear Rudy was far better and that Hayward's rep as such a strong overall player and Rudy's as such a selfish (?) one were overstated?

I doubt it. They are just two different types of players and the type of player Gordon is not as needed as the type of player Gay is. They needed a 3/4 who can create for himself and score, simply because the team lost two of the best players that could do that in Durant and Paul George. They needed consumers, not facilitators, or at least not from that 3/4 position.

This is speculation, but my guess would be Rudy declined initially knowing he probably wouldn't make the team. When Durant and George went down, he received a wink and nod from coach K he would make the team if he wanted it. Gay instantly got minutes the first game while Hayward received a DNP. So yeah...the whole thing stinks.
